Join us in the 12th instalment of the turn-based grand strategy role-playing simulation game that no one’s heard of; Nobunaga’s Ambition: Iron Triangle by Koei. Follow the legendary warlord Oda Nobunaga or any of the other regional feudal lords as they attempt the ultimate goal; the conquest and unification of Japan.

Gameplay

Did you notice all those genre qualifiers in the opening text there? Then you know this game is all about business. A surprisingly thought out game for a 2005 release, there are four main campaign scenarios. You play through Battle for the East, Diamyo Power Struggles, Ambition Untamed and Road Towards Unification, all taking place over the course of 22 years.

There’s a simple goal of the game of defeat the enemy but what’s interesting is the methods, tactics and skills required to successfully do that. There are a great many ways to achieve the same goal. You want to ensure that a neighbouring fief doesn’t attack you? You can agree to a non aggression pact or even set up an arranged marriage.

There’s so much more to it than just quashing enemies as there is always a ruling element where you must ensure your people have food and water, you may need to borrow funds or sell items to make money. You could increase the town size which means more taxes and more money but lowers the peasant loyalty. There is so much to the game that I was pretty shocked by it. It reminds me of Age of Empires 2, a game I would play religiously as a youth, but this title is different as it has so much more depth to its gameplay that it’s kind of easy to get lost in it all.

The Design

So the look of this game is quite unique. From an eagle eye too down view, you control your pieces. The majority of the game takes place from this view so many things lack a fine detail to them but the map is large and the gameplay so in depth that it absolutely makes up for it. The map does look surprisingly barren but the smaller scenes where you may have a sit down with another lord are of a much higher quality and they help ground you, reminding you the story it is trying to tell includes actual people.

The Music

The music to this game is actually incredible. When battles kick off, a full orchestral style piece accompanies it and it really helps create that tension that you’d get if you were on the ground force. An amazing atmosphere is offered throughout this game and I have to put a great deal of that on the music.

8

Although the map was a little barren at times, I couldn’t help but admit that this game was incredibly well designed. I enjoyed the level of thought it provoked in me, something I don’t see very often in a game, even strategy ones.

Pros

  • In depth strategy options
  • Incredible music

Cons

  • Outdated Visuals
  • No din depth zoom in function
