As one of the most popular sports in the world, ice hockey is a sport that has spawned many sporting legends. It is also a sport with a surprising range of games to pick from that you can play. One of the most popular ice hockey games, though, is NHL 14. This came out in 2013 and was regarded as a solid take on the NHL as a sporting league. Developed by EA Canada, it looked to capture the authenticity of an NHL match and also to add in all of the grandeur that comes with the television broadcast of a sports match.

The best sports game of 2013

While the sports industry is often loaded with annual releases, many of them feel like a basic repackage of the year before. However, NHL 14 was a bit of a step forward for this particular series. It was well-regarded for having a strong sense of realism in how the game played out, as well as having a good range of modes to pick from for players. It even won an award at E3 2013 for the Best Sports Game. The game came with a few modes, including a Be A Pro style mode – Live the Life – that let you make your own NHL star and work towards stardom at the top end of the sport. You could also take part in various other modes, including an NHL 94 anniversary mode that brought back the classic game. You could even add a promotion and relegation system that would be used in the Ultimate Team mode that was so popular online. You could also take part in popular events like the NBC Matchup and the Winter Classic events. So, there were enough gameplay modes to keep players coming back.

While it might not compare as favourable as the 2K NHL games, this was regarded as one of the better hockey releases to come out in the mid-2010s.

A fine take on an excellent sport (8/10)

Typically, the reviews of NHL 14 were pretty positive. The addition of some big changes to the gameplay as well as a move to the Player Impact Engine that was so popular in the FIFA sports series helped to create more realistic physics. The addition of the Enforcer Engine also helped to make the infamous NHL fighting experience even more enjoyable to take part in for players.

With additions like a retake on the famous NHL 94 game to various improvements to the series, this was a title that really captured the heart of what makes the NHL so fun. Its reception at the time was fair, given that it managed to really capture what makes a hockey game so fun, frenetic, and overall enjoyable.
