If you ask me, NBA Street V3 is one of the greatest basketball games of all time! It is a damn shame that EA has not revisited this series. Back in the day when this and actually the second game was released, I was at university and this was a series that my friends and I would play all of the time! Today I am seeing just how well this holds up as I have spent most of the last weekend getting reacquainted with it!
King Of The Streets
The main game mode in NBA Street V3 is Street Challenge Mode. This is just awesome as you get to create your own baller. You also get to have your own court which I had a lot of fun playing around with. The whole point is that you are trying to build up your rep by taking part in tournaments and epic dunk contests. This mode is a great deal of fun and it poses quite the challenge to. It is not so hard that it becomes frustrating, but at the same time, it is no cakewalk either.
The Rules Of The Street
I think that what makes NBA Street V3 the best out of the three original games is that it took the best parts from the first game and Vol 2 as well. This is a game that is played on a street court and you get one point for a close shot and two for a longer range one (custom rules are available. The game is completely over the top and they brought back the proper Gamebreaker which is something you earn as you play. This lets you do all kinds of flashy stuff to your dunk or shot that can make it be worth more than its allocated points. This is so much fun to unleash on your opponent, but it also takes a lot of skill to make the most of it.
NBA Street V3 has a very arcadey kind of look to it and the game as a result holds up very well to this day. You have all of the teams that were in the NBA at the time and each one has a solid roster of five players, each with their own stats. They have tried to keep things pretty balanced with the teams which is cool. Speaking of cool, there are some great NBA legends in the game too such as Magic Johnson. However, some big names are missing, most notably Michael Jordan who was in the second game.
The Nintendo All-Stars
I have to admit that my favorite version of NBA Street V3 was the one that was released for the original Xbox. It played the best and it also had the sharpest visuals too. However, I do have to give a special mention to the Nintendo Game Cube version of the game as it featured the Nintendo All-Stars! It was so awesome that EA was able to work out a deal with Nintendo and get Mario, Luigi, and Peach in the game.
I have to say that I think NBA Street V3 holds up very well. EA were masters at street basketball and it is such a shame that they decided not to keep on making these. They did make another game for the PS3 and Xbox 360 and it was also a great game, however, the series has pretty much died since then. While I prefer the Xbox version, you cannot go wrong with any version of the game.
- The gameplay is easy to learn, but hard to master
- The visuals and soundtrack hold up very well to this day
- It is the kind of game that is great to play with your friends
- The Nintendo characters in the Game Cube version are awesome
- It is a shame the PlayStation and Xbox versions do not have their own All-Stars
- EA like to pretend that this series no longer exists
