Mogeko Castle

Cute characters, extreme violence, and prosciutto. Few games can claim to contain all of these things, but Mogeko Castle is definitely one of them. Mogeko Castle is a visual novel-style horror game made in RPG Maker, a genre of game that has exploded in popularity over the last few years. In it, you play as a young girl named Yonaka, who finds herself on a dark, dangerous adventure into a world that is harsh and unkind. It is a story about fear, pain, and sacrifice, dressed up as a cute top-down adventure. The most recent release is actually a remake, and here are some of the features of this upgraded release.

All Story, No Battles

Upon its initial release in April of 2012, Mogeko Castle featured a battle system in which the main character would fight the many enemies she encounters over the course of the game. This feature was removed in the most recent release from March of 2014, allowing the game to be played as a pure story experience with gameplay mostly consisting of interacting with the environment to learn and understand more about the world.

Players can also collect a number of items on their journey, including prosciutto (yes, the Italian ham that is most equivalent to bacon everywhere else), hot peppers, and even adult magazines. These items don’t have any use other than serving as collectibles, but other key items are necessary for advancement through the story. Items like the Big Knife which is used to kill enemies, the Prosciutto Fairy’s Key that you need to access specific rooms, and other single-use items needed for puzzles are all required to complete the game.

Multiple Endings

A staple of the genre of RPG Maker horror games is a large selection of alternate endings, and Mogeko Castle stays true to this formula. It features a total of ten alternate endings, with each one being more dire and horrifying than the last. Some of these endings deal with the main character running away from the ultimate truth revealed at the end of the game, while others show her facing the problem head-on, but one thing they all have in common is the mental cost of violence and cruelty in a world that cares little for your safety, inhabited by beings that want to take things from you against your will that you hold sacred.

Extreme Content

Mogeko Castle opens with a trigger warning that warns players of “violence and grotesque imagery”, and it follows through on this promise, but it also contains a number of harsh and problematic themes throughout the course of the game.

The game focuses on the titular “Mogekos”, which are vaguely feline creatures who have a penchant for assault and torture, specifically of the young teenage girl you play as for the whole game.

These heavy subjects are dealt with in a way that comes across as comical in the game, which is important for players to know who might find that offensive.

Pros

  • Many endings for multiple playthroughs
  • Interesting art style
  • Some of the more sympathetic characters are endearing

Cons

  • Features many difficult to swallow themes throughout
  • The game’s brand of comedy might not be for everyone
