Following its predecessor in both style and ridiculously convoluted naming conventions, Disney’s Magical Quest 2 – The Great Circus Mystery Starring Mickey & Minnie by Capcom is as classic a nostalgia trip as you could get. Jump into the fray by yourself or with a friend in this co-optional, side scrolling platformer.

The Gameplay

As stated, this is a side scrolling platformer. You play as Mickey and/or Minnie and traverse the circus grounds to discover what all the kerfuffle is about. There is quite a lot to love about this game and that’s not just from a nostalgia riddled perspective. The controls are tight and responsive and movement is fluid with a screen that follows the action and allows for a concise and streamlined progression through the levels.

The game also gives you the ability to switch between outfits that have different abilities. The Sweeper outfit that lets you vacuum up enemies and turn them into coins, the Safari outfit that lets you swing from hook points and climb trees and finally, the Western outfit that gives the player a hobby horse that lets you jump higher and a pop-gun that gives you ranged attack.

This game is a simple and amusing romp through a very ‘of its time’ title. I must confess that there is a lack of a challenge as the multiple bosses you encounter do not have any ‘second stage’ style alterations to their tactics, they simply keep fighting in the same way and once you’ve figured it out; it’s simple enough to beat them. Thankfully, the bosses themselves were different enough that it never really felt repetitive. It lacked a lot of what similar games like Mega Man X had to offer the player in terms of difficulty.

They gave this title a few upgrades from its predecessor. One of which was the introduction of a password back-up, that let you retry a mission or jump back into a game where you left off as opposed to fighting through it all again.

The Look and Design

Okay, I got to give credit where credit is due. This game actually looks quite nice. Colours are vibrant and the details in the world are clear and easy to understand, enemies are well designed and fitting for their environments and even the sprite animations are tidy and aesthetically pleasing.

The whole outfit system was really cool and I enjoyed the sufficient differences between them all that made them unique. I also liked the little partition that comes up when the character switches clothes. It shows the style and unmistakeable personality of the game.

The Co op

So unlike its predecessor, this adventure has a really good co-operative element. At the beginning, you can choose to play as either Mickey or Minnie, this is only an aesthetic choice and does not affect gameplay, but after this point, a friend is able to join in the fun at any time with a simple and easy ‘Press Start’ tag in function. Back in the day, this feature was held in very high regard.

8

The rating definitely bears the ‘of its time’ element in mind but the game is solid, even by today’s standards. It could have definitely benefitted frm a harder difficulty and a longer story to get more play time out of it but beyond that can’t knock this solid effort.

Pros

  • Smooth and responsive controls
  • Vibrant and well designed world.

Cons

  • Too easy
