Mating Season

Sure, Mating Season may be a game that has been pretty much abandoned by its developer, but when I hear that this lewd game had monster girls in it… that was all I needed to hear to try it out. To be honest with you, what we have here feels more like a first chapter or even something like a demo, as it is all pretty basic stuff. However, at the same time, you can sort of see the potential of what they were trying to do. It is a real shame that they never stuck with this, as I think there is some good stuff and interesting ideas. At the end of the day, if you like monster girls and monster guys, the game is worth checking out for a little bit.

A Real Working Farm

The premise of the story in Mating Season is that our parents have passed away and they have left us a farm. This farm was known for its monster breeding, but it has fallen on hard times. That is where we come in, as we are tasked with bringing this farm back up to its former glory. The way that we are going to do that is by heading out and getting new monster girls and monster guys and then breeding them to make new monsters, or we can use our very own seed and have some fun in the process. As a premise, this is cool, but as the game is abandoned, it never gets too deep with it.

Can I Borrow A Feeling?

Hey, if you get that Simpsons reference, you are awesome, and I give you permission to go and play The Simpsons: Hit and Run. Anyway, as I was playing Mating Season, I was getting a real sense of deja vu. The game borrows pretty heavily from another lewd farming/breeding game called Breeding Season. I would later find out that the reason for the familiarity is that some of the lines of dialogue are straight up lifted from that game! Now, to be fair, I am not going on a witch hunt here. I get the impression this was placeholder text, and they were going to fine-tune it and make it their own, but I did find it very noticeable.

Down On The Farm

Much like the story, the gameplay of Mating Season is not fully realized either. We basically need to head out and find/catch monster girls and guys and then breed them. You want to breed the right monsters together so that you get a monster with better stats as a result. Of course, you can breed yourself with the monsters if you so wish. You can also head into town and take on various simple quests and buy new things to help feed and care for your characters. The thing is, the whole thing is very janky and not thought out all that well. The game offers you the ability to explore, but there is not enough interesting stuff to make it worth your while. This, like the story, I am sure would have been fleshed out, but what we have here is very, very basic.

Monster Guys And Monster Girls

To be fair, the presentation of Mating Season is off to a decent start here. The characters are in full 3D, and while there is not a massive selection of monster guys and girls as they tend to use the same body type, but with horns or cow-like features. I think they look decent enough; there are only a couple of “breeding” variations if you catch my drift, but this can be done with male on female and male on male if that is your thing. The game is nice and bright, and I do like the farm setting. You can just tell that this is a rather early build of the game and that they intended to add so much more to the game.

Pros:

• I liked the monster breeding farm setting
• The game has a nice and bright art style
• The full 3D exploration and characters are ambitious
• With a bit more time, this could have been very good

Cons:

• The game is very, very unfinished in every area
• They straight-up use dialogue from another game for the story
