There's nothing like a good puzzle to take your mind off of everyday troubles, and there's nothing like playing mahjong to get that accomplished. That's why Mahjong Titans proves to be one of the most satisfying titles I've played in a while.
As you take your time learning the ins and outs of this title, you'll find yourself taking a step back from reality and focusing on what matters, which in this case is matching mahjong tiles. Mahjong Titans proves that you don't need overly complex gameplay to provide enjoyment for players of all skill levels, and it delivers on its premise tenfold.
Match and Clear
If you've ever played mahjong before, you know that the objective is to clear the board by matching similar-looking tiles. If you hadn't played a mahjong game before, then, congratulations! You now know the basics of the game, and why it's so addictive in the first place.
While other titles like Battle Chess took a classic game and redefined its core gameplay, Mahjong Titans' aim is not to reinvent the wheel. Quite the contrary: this might be one of the purest mahjong games you'll ever play. There are no timers or flashy graphics – just simple, easy controls, straightforward gameplay, and a focus on giving you the best possible experience with as few distractions as possible.
Now, if you're used to playing digital mahjong games, you're probably wondering how this title compares to the others available in the market today. The answer to that question is a resounding "exceptionally well." Mahjong Titans does an excellent job of making the most out of the formula. It keeps the fundamentals and expands upon them to ensure that every match has meaning, and in turn, provides countless hours of entertainment.
A crucial part of any mahjong game is the puzzle variety. Mahjong puzzles come in many shapes, like the popular turtle, which essentially dictates which pieces the player can remove first.
In Mahjong Titans, players have to rely on more than one strategy, because the tiles they select to solve each puzzle are randomly generated. This makes every match different, meaning you will never encounter the same puzzle twice.
Maybe one aspect that the game could have polished a bit more is its visuals. Other titles like Chessmaster 3D nailed this by providing a good variety of themes. Mahjong Titans does very little to differentiate itself visually from its competitors, making the game feel a bit too generic at times. Other than that, Mahjong Titans offers a thoroughly enjoyable gameplay experience that is sure to keep you entertained for weeks.
Mahjong Titans is a brilliant take on a tabletop classic with simple gameplay that belies its complexity.
