I was very excited to check out Long Drive North: Co-Op RV Simulator after really enjoying the demo, but this is a game that is in very, very early access as I write this. You can see the good shining through, but this is one of those games that needs an absolute ton of work done on it before it can be classed as being complete. Hey, I had fun with it, but if I am being honest, I think this needed a little longer in the oven before they released it as I can see some people being put off by how unfinished and unpolished the initial release of the game is.
Going For A Long Drive
A huge reason that I was excited to play Long Drive North: Co-Op RV Simulator was that I loved the game, Long Drive, and I thought that this was going to be basically that, but with survival mechanics, and it kind of is. I think the premise is really cool, and I played this with a friend of mine, and I have to say, I found it far more enjoyable playing this with my friend than when I was messing around with it on my own. Perhaps once the game is fully complete, it will become a game that is just as enjoyable on your own. However, as of writing, I highly recommend you only get this if you have someone willing to play with you.
The Master of Disaster!
The game sort of drip feeds you bits of story, but the premise of Long Drive North: Co-Op RV Simulator is something that I do really like. The setting is in North America, hence the cold weather and snow! There was some kind of ecological disaster, and now mankind is pretty much decimated, and we play the role of a survivor who is just trying to survive one day to the next, one meal to the next, and we are doing it all with our pet dog. The lack of filling in the blanks of what has happened kind of reminds me of the movie, The Road. Although I do hope things are fleshed out with an update at some point.
Can’s See the Forest for the Trees
Let me say, I do think the idea of Long Drive North: Co-Op RV Simulator is really cool. A survival game where you travel from area to area in your RV. Going hunting and fishing, while also foraging in the wilderness for food. Finding old cars and places to ransack in order to get resources to craft with and fix up your RV. Add to this the fact that you can team up with a few buddies and make a little RV survivor community, and you have an excellent idea for a game. However, in the very early build of the game that I have played. This has a lot of problems. The map is like a small circle; there are not many places to explore, and there are numerous technical bugs! I have fallen through the map multiple times. It is 50/50 if my dog will get in the RV, allowing me to leave, and there is just a real lack of things to do. It is a shame to as I wanted to, not just like this game, I really wanted to love it!
A Strange Thing Is This Life
Look, I do not want to rip on the game too much as it is clearly in early access, but the visuals of Long Drive North: Co-Op RV Simulator are pretty basic. They are kind of basic, and in some ways, they remind me of the first Life is Strange game that had a kind of odd filter over everything. This is like that, only nowhere near as detailed. I love the frozen and up north setting that the game has, and with a bit more polish, I think this could be quite the looker. So far, I feel like I am just seeing the same thing over and over again, so I would like a little more variety in this post-apocalyptic version of the USA.
Man, I feel like I have been pretty harsh on this, and hopefully, by the time you are reading this, the game will have been updated and in a much better state than what I experienced. The thing is, Long Drive North: Co-Op RV Simulator is a game that I so, so want to like, but right now, if you told me this was an alpha or even a pre-alpha build of the game, I would probably believe you.
Pros:
- I loved the idea of the game
- The setting is very cool
- Living out of an RV is a great idea
- You can play this with friends, and that is neat
Cons:
- The version I played was super buggy and unfinished
- This needs work in pretty much every department
