Online games come in many shapes and forms, there's truly something for everybody who's out there looking for an online game to have fun with. Strategy games are always popular, and lately, we've also seen a surge in the popularity of card-battling games. And we're not only talking about mobile games like South Park Phone Destroyer or even other titles like Thronebreaker. Library of Ruina is a not-so-known game that has a lot going for it, even though it may not be the most popular game out there.

Now, even if you've heard of it, and find great scores online, it's surprisingly hard to find much info about the game itself. We'll do our best to give you a little hindsight into what the game is about and then you can decide whether it's a must-have for you, or you can skip it. So, let's get started with that already.

Is it a sequel?

Even though nothing in the name implies it and it's the only game by this name, it's actually a direct sequel to a game called Lobotomy Corporation. So if you really want to understand what's going on in the game, we highly recommend that you go and check it out. In the Library of Ruina, we follow the protagonist Roland and what happens after he stumbles into the Library. A woman named Angela runs the place, and Roland is assigned to aid her in the search for the perfect book. Getting the "perfect book" is what it’ll take to earn Angela’s freedom.

Sure it all may seem a bit confusing at the moment, but if you get around to playing the first game beforehand it's really simple. Of course, the part about getting the perfect book can be simply explained. As you might have already assumed, you'll have to defeat a lot of enemies and turn them into different books.

So many books

As we mentioned earlier, when you defeat enemies they will give you a book, you can use those to advance through the game in different ways. Some of them can be delivered to various characters throughout the game. But you can actually use them and combine them to upgrade your characters and equipment too.

The battle system however is different from your average turn-based RPG game. It depends a lot on building a good deck of ability cards and mastering all the special effects and attacks.

There's plenty of luck involved in there too, as many times it is set to roll a dice, and often you'll depend on getting the right cards at the right moment. However, this is not a card game either like Yu-Gi-Oh! Or The Witcher's Gwent. There are RPG thighs involved, but they depend on the deck building system.

The Library of Ruina is still in early access, so, naturally, it has a good deal of issues around it. Some things are not yet final, but what we have already is great, from game presentation to gaming experience. There are nice illustrations and beautiful art in the cutscenes and in the in-game experience. If you're a fan of card-based game mechanics you should really keep an eye out for the Library of Ruina.

Pros

  • Great design
  • Interesting mechanics
  • Looks great
  • Gameplay is solid

Cons

  • Still on early access
  • Can be boring if you're not a hardcore fan of the genre
  • It’s overly complicated sometimes
