There’s a large debate over when the golden age of gaming occurred. Plenty of people believe that the golden age is long gone, happening somewhere in the 90’s, others could argue it was the console wars that erupted in the late 2000’s, and the last few might say we’re still in it today as narratives and gameplay are still undergoing major changes.

However, the PS2’s golden age was happening right around the time Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil had released, bringing its own flavor of platformer to the forefront. It was not total perfection, but as a 2D platformer set in a 3D environment, it kept up and even outpaced some of its opponents, competing with similar titles like Crash Bandicoot. While Crash remained prevalent in the eyes of the public, Klonoa 2 left a great mark on anyone who played it.

Save Lunatea

Following Klonoa’s adventures from the first game in Phantomile, he is now tasked with saving the dream land of Lunatea. The story of this second installment was generally received positively for being accessible to younger players, while also keeping some ‘dark’ plot points that older audiences can get into. Compared to the Klonoa: Phantomile, there was a noticeable lack of innovation in the narrative. It maintained the theme and ideas set forth by the first, but when it comes down to brass tacks, there is nothing especially new or gripping story-wise.

Regardless, it is enjoyable enough that it never becomes an issue. Filled with likable characters like Lolo, Popka, and of course Klonoa himself, it is easy to become attached to each of them and their goals as you aim to take down the former priestess Leorina, and Tat, her companion. The rich environments and characters perfectly complement the platforming gameplay that they accompany.

Travel Across Dreams

The gameplay of Klonoa 2 is almost exactly like the gameplay of the first title. It is a 2.5D platformer – Klonoa can only move left or right, but all the environments are 3D rendered. As you travel through the dreamland of Lunatea, there are a wide range of enemies that you’ll face and a few bosses too. To deal with them, you’re able to use Klonoa’s ring ability, ‘wind bullet’. Once they’re knocked out, he can then use them to double jump to higher spaces and open various ability boxes. Outside of this, the boss battles are a bit different; you will still use the same mechanics to fight bosses – knock out a weaker enemy, then throw it at the boss to deal damage – but there are specific arenas to move around in. Level design in the game was fair in most places.

The beginning of the game definitely has younger audiences in mind, but late game levels can prove to be a challenge even for experienced players. It won’t take long to get but is tricky initially. Lastly, the graphics for the time period were impressive. There were still a low number of polygons, but the game ran smoothly despite the number of enemies/presence of a boss on screen.

Bottom Line

Klonoa 2: Lunatea’s Veil is an excellent sequel that holds up well.
