How does Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix appear? Ever since the fateful day when a Square Enix developer bumped into a Disney executive in an elevator and inexplicably pitched the concept that would turn out to be Kingdom Hearts. The series has went from strength to strength, from platform to platform and has managed to create one of the most unique JRPG games to ever grace the medium of gaming. Not to mention perhaps the most convoluted storyline in gaming history to boot. So it was hardly surprising that ahead of the much anticipated sequel that was about twelve years in the making., Square Enix would release a game that will act as a collection of all their past works, readying the fan base for what was to come.
Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix is a collection of all the best titles within the series. So obviously it plays like any title within the Kingdom Hearts series. However, looking outside the series, the games have similarities to games like Final Fantasy, Crisis Core and Ni No Kuni to name a few. This may just be a spit shine of groundbreaking games within the series but does this collection recapture the magic of this iconic JRPG? We find out in our review of the Kingdom Hearts 2.5 Remix.
Cohesion At Last
If there is one thing that alienates newcomers to the Kingdom Hearts franchise, it’s the story. Fans find it hard to follow the twists and turns even when they have all the information right in front of them. So you can imagine how difficult it can be to follow the story when you have to play each game across ten different console platforms. The series has games on the PS2, PS4, PSP, GBA, Nintendo DS, Nintendo 3DS, a pre-application era mobile game and a modern day mobile game which are all canon to the core plot. In short, it’s an absolutely nightmare to gather all the parts necessary to play this series.
Well, this collection solves this problem by providing all the games in the series in one neat package. Plus, the game adapts the formats of each game so that they can be played and enjoyed by fans. For example, Re-coded, the mobile game is adapted to play more like Chain of Memories so players can take in the plot without playing an outdated mobile game. Plus, Chain of Memories is actually Re: Chain of Memories which is the Japan only PS2 version. Overall, this makes the series much more accessible and was a great decision by Square.
Plenty of Quality Content
Then aside from the games that are adjusted to be more accessible. You have the games that barely needed adjusting at all included in this package. Games like KH1, KH2 and Birth by Sleep represent the best the series has to offer and these titles are just as wonderful as we all remember. The graphical enhancements and quality of life changes are much appreciated and best of all. We get treated to the final mix versions of each title, meaning we get the Cavern of Remembrance data battles in KH2 for example.
Overall, we cannot fault this perfect collection whatsoever. The games on offer are all the best version of what they can be. This makes the series more accessible for older and newer generations of gamer. The graphics have been enhanced, the game performance is much better, the games included are still as brilliant as the day they released and because of all of this, we have to give this one a perfect score.
Kingdom Hearts as a series is a must play for any keen gamer and thanks to this collection, it’s now so much easier.
- Every game included is the best version of itself
- Graphical and performance enhancements are fantastic
- Makes the series more accessible to fans
- Games made for other platforms are adapted as needed
- Re-coded is purely filler content and could have been left out
- 358/2 days is just cut scenes and not playable
