Time to scramble your jets and alert the military, because Kaiju Wars is coming to a number of different platforms on March 22. In this turn-based strategy game, players will need to defeat large monsters terrifying various cities around the world with skill (well, and military might) alone. This exciting game is brought to us by the developers Klabater and Foolish Mortals Games, and is coming to Xbox, Playstation, PC and Switch later this spring.

2D Pixel Art

The artwork for Kaiju Wars has a noticeable style to it that is both classy and retro at the same time. Despite its 2D Pixel nature, there’s a refinement to the artwork that suggests a lot of work went into making them as beautiful as they are. The bright colors and fairly smooth animation all work together to make the visuals in this game appealing.

Original Inspiration

Although Kaiju Wars is its own game, it actually has ties to another. The developers originally played an old game called Godzilla 2: War of the Monsters as children: a game where you had to defeat Godzilla in a turn-based strategy like Kaiju Wars.

The game was terrible, at least according to the developers, but they still played it a lot because it was so inspiring to them. As grownups, they decided to create their own version of the game, fixing all the problems and improving on it with fresh, new ideas.

A real strategy game

In a recent interview, the developers shared that one of the biggest things they’re proud of about the game is the randomness of it. There’s an equal percentage chance of the monster stepping on each potential tile it can reach. The only planned action that the monsters have is that it will try to get to the nearest building to destroy, so you know it won’t be heading away from the city.

This means that you, the player, really need to think about your strategy and where you want to be. There’s no memorizing the monsters pattern and playing it over again—he may well step on a different tile this time. Thanks to this random aspect of the game, playing as the army you have to think really hard about all the potential actions a monster could take, and have a plan for everything. It’s very similar to, and in fact modeled after, another game called Into the Breach.

This is by far the most exciting turn-based strategy game to come out in a long time. It’s obvious that the developers have created this game as a labor of love, and that they put the time in to make it the best that it can be.
