Dark hallways, creaky wooden floors, dilapidated buildings. These staples of the horror genre make any horror media instantly recognizable. In as much as these things become commonplace, they also become less scary. But fear can always be revitalized, and Insomnis seeks to make sure you lose some sleep. This horror game created by Path Games, a horror-focused studio based out of Barcelona, Spain, is a singular horror video game experience with gameplay that will keep you glued to your screen, and a story that will shake you to your very core. Here are some of the spine-tingling features of Path Game’s Insomnis.

A Haunting Story

In Insomnis you play as Joe Castevet, who is the grandson of a world-renowned scientist named Roman Castevet. Upon his untimely demise, Joe inherits his palatial home and base of his research: Castevet Manor.

Why was the manor bequeathed to Joe? How did Roman die? Joe decides to begin his search for answers when he arrives at Castevet Manor, but what he is met with is a house that holds innumerable secrets and mysteries. As day turns to night, he also learns that the house may not be entirely uninhabited, and whatever lives there wants to prevent him from learning the truth about his grandfather.

First Person Horror

The indie first-person horror game isn’t a new invention, but it is still a very effective method of delivering chilling scares for gamers of all ages. Insomnis, while a member of this genre, is less of an Outlast “run and hide” style of game, and more of a Layers of Fear “walk through environments while a story is revealed to you” style game. This doesn’t mean it is light on the horror though. Like Layers of Fear, Insomnis’ Castevet manor has many terrifying secrets and mysteries, many of which don’t want to be discovered. The ones that do wish to be discovered however, might be even worse. As Joe Castevet, you must explore this manor and uncover the secrets it holds. The walls of this house are almost as old and angry as the ghosts that inhabit them, and neither of them want you to escape.

Poltergeist Puzzles

In addition to the house exploration gameplay, Insomnis also presents players with a number of spooky puzzles that will leave you scratching your head and the hairs on your neck on end. These puzzles won’t be easy, and you will need to be able to take in your surroundings to expertly look for clues if you want to solve them.

Correct solutions to these puzzles will be granted with story progression, and perhaps even answers to the questions you might hold about the Castevet manor. The previous owner of the manor, Joe’s grandpa Roman Castevet, might have been close to uncovering these sinister truths, but he’s no longer around to help you…

Pros

  • Very scary!
  • Well done lighting amplifies the horror in each room
  • The many rooms of the manor are well crafted
  • Story is truly frightening

Cons

  • Kind of a short experience
  • Some puzzles are a little obtuse
