What a clever idea for a game Infectious is! I am not entirely sure what category I would put this game into as it is a bit of simulation, strategy, and RPG, but I would not say that it fits comfortably into any one particular genre. It is a game that is all about destroying a host organism from the inside and I am not sure that this is something that I have actually seen in a video game before so that is pretty damn cool man!

The Host Will Die

The point of Infectious is that at the start of your game you need to pick which kind of virus you want to be. You can select from either flu, bacteriophage, or UEV which is locked at the start of the game. The idea is that you take your chosen virus around the body and destroy the immune system and crash their vital functions and organs.

The Fab Three!

The flu virus speaks for itself we all know what the deal with the flu is and if you select that at the start of Infectious you need to make it so that the flu can turn deadly. Selection bacteriophage is quite interesting in that this one is relatively harmless and you must use the right DNA to mutate in order to become something much more deadly. UEV is a virus not from this world! It is an alien virus that can clone the other cells and be a bit more insidious in its design. Each infection can grow with new stats, abilities, clones, and more and that is the ultimate goal of each level.

That Sickening Feeling

While I do feel that there is something simple about Infectious, it could perhaps have been done with a better tutorial system. There are close to 20 levels for you to play through in the game and you will need to make sure that your virus is growing stronger and stronger so it can fight off the attacks from the host's immune system. However, after each level, you have these stats that pop up and the game does not do a very good job of explaining to you how to improve these and progress through the game.

Under A Microscope

The only other game that I can think of which went for this inside the body kind of style was some old game for the Atari which was gross as hell! With Infectious it kind of looks like a top down shooter. We move our virus around the host body and the whole game has a rather unique look to it. It does seem a bit basic, perhaps like something you would have seen on the Game Boy Advance or even the Nintendo DS back in the day, but there is no denying it is a very interesting looking game.

7.5

I think that there is a good amount of fun to be had here with Infectious. I just wish that the game did a better job of teaching you how to actually play it. You can fumble your way through the early stages which is what I did, but I would have still much preferred a more in-depth tutorial system that taught me more of the little things about the game. If you think it looks cool and interesting, give it a try.

Pros:

  • It is cool how you can play as a virus inside a body
  • One of the viruses is an alien one and that is neat
  • You have to upgrade and grow your virus in each stage
  • I like the whole premise of the game

Cons:

  • It can be hard to know what you have to do
  • I am not sure how much replay value there is in a game like this
