Hydlide is FCI's follow-up to the hugely popular RPG title, Ultima. Although Hydlide doesn't have much in common with Ultima, it does retain some of the same basic play elements and guarantees plenty of play value. You won't beat this one the same night you get it.

You control the warrior Jim on a quest to bring peace to Fairyland. On your way you must retrieve a number of weapons and power-ups that are necessary to complete the adventure. Standart RPG functions are enhanced with several action routines.

Hydlide is a little tricky to get started, but once you've worked your power up you can concentrate more on the game. While I'm not the biggest fan of RPG type games, this one does have some redeeming features. The graphics and sounds are rough, but the game play holds many hours of surprises.

I can't remember what this game was about. That's about all I can say about Hydlide.

Hydlide is a good game with graphics that are average and music that is not too terribly annoying. 90% of the game is comprised of building up energy to play the other 10%. A good alternative to Ultima, Zelda, and other quest-oriented RPG games.

The graphics in Hydlide are not too good. I was also confused by the action sequences and what was supposed to be done. It takes a while to catch on and start the game and it is probably good if you already beat Zelda, but I don't care enough about roleplaying games to put in that much effort.

Game Reviews

With a sword of power the warrior Jim must defeat five magical realms and locate the ten treasures of the fairyland in this new RPG. Plenty of adventure awaits you as you set out on a mission to destroy the forces of evil and rescue the captive Princess Anne. Multiple levels and various settings will challenge even the most seasoned game players!

The devil Boralis has killed the King, cast a magic spell to turn Princess Ann into three fairies, and let loose a horde of monsters and evil creatures to destroy the Kingdom. As the young knight, Jim, you must search through the labyrinth to find the missing jewels, the King's sword and shield, and the special charms that help you destroy the monsters. The more you kill, the greater your experience and your defense power. An eternal flame lamp and immortality potion gives you the extra chance to survive the deadly maze. You must find all three sparkling fairies to restore the beautiful Princess because only she has the key to help you slay Boralis and the fire breathing water dragon that guards the devil's castle.

Released in 1985, this role-playing video game was published by T&E Soft, Inc., Toshiba-EMI Ltd. and developed by T&E Soft, Inc.

The story is that Varalys, a very evil and cruel demon, called down curses upon the princess Ann and turned her into three fairies. The player takes on the role of Sir Jim, who sets off in search of the fairies and Varalys as well. To murder him. Because only this way Sir Jim can help Ann and take the curse off.

As soon as the princess comes back alive and well, the kingdom will be saved. The fighting is a bit more thoroughly than just hack and slash. There is a choice between fighting with a defensive or offensive stance. Or else, the player can use magic spells.
