I really enjoyed the first game, so when House Builder 2 was released in early access, I knew I had to dust off my hammer, screwdriver, and hard hat and get back to work building houses!
A Hard Day's Work
Before we dive into this, I do have to tell you that this is in early access as I write this, so there is still a decent amount of stuff to be added here. There is not much in the way of story in the game; it is just about you building up a business that is about building homes and buildings. The game has a kind of corny and goofy vibe to it, and I hope that this is something that is expanded upon as they offer more and more updates as the game progresses. Some have said that it has mobile game vibes as far as the story goes, and I can kind of see that.
Taking The Easy Way Out
One of the things that is a little disappointing for me about House Builder 2 is the way that the game kind of takes a lot of the things you could do in the first game out of your hands. You do not have to actually use the hammer or screwdriver here; it is just a case of pointing and clicking on things, and it all happens on its own. The game still has that addictive quality to it, as far as planning your houses and making money from them, and then investing that into your business. However, I am not a massive fan of them taking stuff out of the players' hands, especially when it was in the last game.
A Touch Screen Kind Of Feeling
I mentioned this before, but there is a bit of a mobile game quality about this game. That is most evident in the way that the game looks. The official description says that it is a low-poly kind of art style. To me, it has more of a mobile game look, or even a game that is made with an AI look about it. Hey, it is not bad, and I kind of dig the goofy vibes that they have gone for here. However, there is no denying that the presentation of this game may be a turn-off for some people.
Man, I hate to say it, but House Builder 2 is kind of a disappointment in its first early access release. It is certainly not bad, but this feels like a step down from the original game.
Pros:
- I liked the idea of being a builder
- It still has that addictive quality about it
- They will add and fix stuff in later releases, I am sure
Cons:
- This feels like a step back from the first game
- There is not much gameplay here compared to the first game
