Imagination can be a powerful thing, and nothing ignites it more than playing with toy cars. Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge takes those outrageous scenarios we imagined when we play with those tiny cars and turns them into a reality, with some mixed results.
While the stunt-based formula of this game should have been an instant hit, the truth is that the game has some glaring flaws that keep it from reaching its full potential. Despite its shortcomings, there’s definitely an audience for games like this, so let’s see if this Hot Wheels game appeals to you.
If you’re familiar with Hot Wheels cars, then you must already know how their tracks usually look like. Stunt Track Challenge takes those orange plastic tracks and elevates them to crazy proportions. In a way, these tracks feature some charming amounts of detail, even though their designs might leave something to be desired.
Most of the time, driving in Stunt Track Challenge demands little more than holding the gas button. Cars are difficult to control, seemingly weighing more than their small frame should. This makes navigating the wide turns of the tracks a sluggish (and boring) experience.
The game also has a power sliding feature to make better turns. Problem is, there’s no need to use this technique to properly drive, especially since most turns are wide enough that turning shouldn’t be a problem.
Whenever we play a racing game that has stunts as a main mechanic, we can expect said tricks to be fun or eyecatching. Sadly, that’s not the case in Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge. You won’t find Tony Hawk Pro Skater levels of stunts here or even Mario Kart’s 8 types of feats: Stunt Track Challenge is as basic as it comes.
Most of the stunts you can perform in this game involve your car slowly turning in mid-air, and that’s it. While they might not be fun to pull off (or watch), these stunts, at the very least, add some variety to the stale gameplay.
Around the world on Hot Wheels
If there’s one thing this game has going for it, that is track variety. Stunt Track Challenge will take you around the world and will let you race in interesting and varied locales. If you hear “Hot Wheels” and immediately assume that the game will have you racing on orange tracks, you’re sorely mistaken.
From Jurassic jungles to outer space, visual variety is one of the game’s strongest parts. Even though each track features some special pitfalls and traps that you have to be aware of, it’s a bit disappointing to see that these traps don’t change based on the levels you are on.
Even though the tracks’ designs remain similar throughout, there’s still some nice attention to detail when it comes to the thrills of each level. Playing through the tracks feels like you’re racing in a Theme Park ride.
However disappointing the stunts might be, the fun and varied tracks might keep younger players immersed for longer sessions. After all, this game is primarily targeted at young gamers, and they will surely have a blast with what this game has to offer.
Hot Wheels: Stunt Track Challenge’s shallow gameplay might not appeal to seasoned racing game players, but its fun formula will certainly appeal to younger audiences. The varied courses and entertaining levels will keep you entertained for a while, as long as you don’t come in expecting a solid racing experience.
