Heretic

Heretic is a first-person shooter, designed and animated like many other games from the early to late nineties. Heretic was a bold example of competition beside other game in the genre during its hay day – and remains a strong and exciting experience all the way to 2021!

Heretic is one of the few games that pushed.

New Challenger Approaching!

Heretic was created and developed by Raven Software. Sound familiar? It probably does – because Raven Software was bought by Activision and now works on the annual installments on Call of Duty. Clearly, they had a strong reputation for FPS games! And it shows with the classic PC game, Heretic.

At first glance, the game looks remarkably similar to Doom, but looking closer you will see key differences that play into why this game is such a cult-classic (no pun intended). Heretic follows the story of an elf names Corvus on the adventure to defeat the Serpent Riders. The story is well created and builds a strong foundation of lore for the various settings, weapons and enemies fought along the way. The graphics are a nice time-capsule from the 90’s and hold up well; it’s more of an art style at this point. Because both DOOM and Heretic use the same engine, the visual style is nearly identical.

The gameplay is also solid. The weapons react and function as you would expect, exceptionally responsive and make for fun gameplay. There is a constant ‘dance’ going on in Heretic, balancing movement to avoid incoming damage while shooting your own weapons. It is obsessively fun.

The one major disappointment of Heretic is its musical score. DOOM has been (and always will be) loved for its combination of demonic gore saturated gameplay and intense satanic music. The two go together like peanut butter and jelly; it adds to the satisfaction of each and every kill. Heretic sadly does not. The musical composition of Heretic is far less intense and does not compliment the gameplay like DOOM. It really dulls down the excitement of gameplay!

Go Hard or Go Home

By today’s standards, easier difficulties of this game are trivial. Players are used to manning controllers with a plethora of different buttons to control actions. Heretic, by contrast, uses very few keyboard buttons, so player options are far more limited. Most players will need to play this game on its highest difficulty to truly earn the satisfaction of its completion. Let victory be punishing!

Let’s Wrap this Up

To put it simply – you should play Heretic. It’s a must-play for any cult-classic FPS player. The blend of exciting levels, hell-fantasy enemies, and orchestrated plot is a guarantee for a good time.

8.5

As stated earlier, the music in the game isn’t up to the quality of DOOM, but it’s a small caveat in an otherwise fantastic game; and if the music bothers you that much, you can always play the DOOM soundtrack in the background!

Pros:

  • Outstanding gameplay
  • Plain-awesome enemies/setting
  • Well-aged graphics

Cons:

  • Music is a bit meh

Heretic is a lesser-known, but just as exciting, supernatural blastfest from the makers of Doom. Voyage through a magical 3D world populated by elf wizards, flying gargoyles, sabreclaws, and the like.
