Gundam Battle Assault 2

A 2D fighting game starring everyone’s favorite Japanese giant robots, Gundam Battle Assault 2 features a much bigger roster than its predecessor, along with some welcome additions to the game’s formula. In a time when 2D fighters dominate the arcades, Gundam Battle Assault 2 proves that there’s a chance for any franchise to become a successful fighter.

Featuring some of the most emblematic Mobile Suits in the series, this game is perfect for new American fans, especially those who discovered the franchise through Gundam Wing. Despite the fact that the game was released late into the PSone’s lifecycle, the choice to stick with 2D sprites lets this game deliver a stunning performance on the aging console.

Battle of the Titans

Instead of going the obvious route of doing an arena fighter or some kind of complicated simulation game, the Gundam Battle Assault series aims to replicate the success of games like Street Fighter. This means that the gameplay of this title is easy enough to pick up and play, but it remains satisfactory hard to master every character’s button combos.

Like its predecessor, Battle Assault 2 lets players choose from a modest roster of Mobile Suits to battle in 2D combat. Despite the many improvements to the combo and special systems, there’s one aspect of the game that still remains bafflingly unfixed: the size of the arenas.

Considering that the mobile suits are supposed to be roughly 18 meters tall, the decision of making the stages ridiculously small makes no sense whatsoever. However, this does make the Mobile Suits look bigger, especially the mini-bosses like Dozle Zabi’s Big Zam.

Gundam Fighters

The idea behind the Gundam Battle Assault series was to introduce the show to Western audiences. To achieve this, the developers have decided to include some of the most emblematic Mobile Suits from each season. This means that players will get to choose from Mobile Suits from almost every Gundam series before Gundam Seed, except for Zeta Gundam.

Especially noteworthy are the Suits from Mobile Fighter G Gundam. This show, unlike many of its more serious counterparts, treats Gundam like fighting robots: think Beyblade with giant killing machines.

This means that these characters can go wild with their special attacks and their handling, feeling less like a clunky robot and more like an agile fighter. This doesn’t mean that the game has balancing issues, as most mobile suits seem to be equal in terms of power.

Another cool feature is that the suits feature real-time damage, letting players see exactly how close to fall their opponents are. Things like missing shell parts and exposed cables look fantastic in Gundam Battle Assault 2’s multi-layered sprites, proving that you don’t need 3D to look amazing.

All in all, Gundam Battle Assault 2 is a great introduction to the franchise. Fans of the series might find some of their favorite suits from the anime missing, but with so many positives relating to the gameplay, it’s hard being too hard on such an accomplished fighting game.
