GRID Autosport

Grid Autosport is a unique racing game designed for a variety of different platforms. Where many similar games expend themselves adding new features or packing in more car designs, GRID Autosport’s stripped down approach lends it more power than any racing game before it.

What makes the game unique from other racing games is that much of the garbage stuffed into other racing games has been taken out. Instead, the game focuses purely on racing, and getting you into a great car as fast as possible.

Open Options

One of the most refreshing changes is that there’s no bulky navigation to struggle through before getting into a car. Instead, the game offers you a wide range of different tracks to race on. You can pick any of these races at any time, without being forced to play through content in order to pick a new track. Each track offers unique play styles, ranging from challenging turns to high speed runways. There’s no story mode or career more to slow you down, just pure unadulterated racing.

Racing is now a real challenge

Most racing games give you the faster car, so its relatively easy to win. Since you’re already faster, as long as you can get around the other cars you can get to the podium. In GRID Autosport, your car isn’t any faster—your brakes are better. This makes winning a real challenge. In order to get around an opponent you need to anticipate when they put on their brakes for a turn and brake a little bit after them so you can inch ahead.

This transforms the racing game from a goal of neatly getting first in every single race to feeling gratified if you place at all. The challenge is there, and wins feel more legitimate. Driving is also much more realistic, with the cars less jerky compared to Grid 2, but not quite as good as the dazzling game Assetto Corsa.

Fantastic Graphics

The graphics for the cars are visually stunning, and there’s an optional graphic pack you can download to make it even more beautiful. You can switch from different graphic modes in the menu as needed. The difference is definitely noticeable when you do, but usually most noticeable in the backdrops rather than the cars. It’s not as beautiful as artistic games designed for realism, but it doesn’t need to be. That’s not this particular game’s niche. It’s a racing game, and doesn’t focus on anything more than that.

GRID Autosport doesn’t pretend to be anything it is not. It’s a racing game, pure and simple. While diehard racing fans may complain that there’s nothing truly new or innovative in this game, most will be glad that all the unnecessary fluff has been taken out of it.
