In the year that gave us Halo 2 and Half-Life 2, it's sad to see a game with such impressive potential fall so short. Goldeneye: Rogue Agent works poorly as a FPS, but even less successfully as a Bond franchise title. You take the role of a former agent of MI-6, one of James Bond's fellow spies. After losing your eye and turning vicious, bitter, and essentially completely ruthless, you've been cast out of MI-6, turned rogue and joined with the forces of none other than Goldfinger himself. Set amidst a war between Dr. No and Goldfinger, the first mistake you may notice is that you're not given the chance to truly be a villain. You're a bad guy fighting bad guys, armed with your wits, weaponry, and an impressive cybernetic eye, designed by none other than Francisco Scaramanga.

In essence, the main problem with this FPS is its basic control. Using the analog sticks to control this game is essentially a nightmare. The balance between ease of movement and ease of aiming is poorly managed, making for a game that's extremely hard to aim. The autoaim feature is also basically difficult to use, owing to the fact that it's necessary to learn how to use each weapon differently.

Pistol weapons seem to be very critical of someone's aiming ability, whereas the P90 smg seems to allow you to spray at least a good half screen above someone's head and still kill them. Best among the game play are two things, rogue points and the capture feature. If you stun an opponent with a melee attack, you can take him hostage, using him as a human shield. Rogue points are awarded for particularly inventive kills, precise shots, environment use and other things, making it at least a nod at awarding you for good play.

All in all, Goldeneye: Rogue Agent is hampered by an all around unoriginality combined with essentially horrendous gameplay. I was looking quite forward to this title, but ultimately, found myself disappointed.
