Sports management games can often feel bogged down or unnecessarily confusing, but this particular one is elegantly designed and easy to play. It’s great both for long term fun and is easy to get into. If you know you like sports management, or just want to explore the world of football, this is a great game to test the waters with.

Customizable Teams

A very fun aspect of the game is the fact that you can do some minor customizations to both your own team and the rival team. The customization options are modest, like team colors, names of schools, and zip codes. The zip code aspect is an especially nice touch, because players from zip codes close to the school will act as such. It’s one of many small but nice touches to this very polished game.

The team colors and names are also a nice bonus if you like to add a roleplay aspect to your game or want to relive your own college past. It’s all in all a very welcome addition to the game.

Fantastic Recruiting System

The recruiting system is very well done. If you’re at all familiar with other sports simulators, you may be familiar with EA College Football, a similar sporting game. Their recruitment section is very similar to Football Coach: College Dynasty’s take on it.

Every minor little detail can make a difference on whether a player comes to your side. Sometimes just being targeted is enough to convince a player to come to your side, some need to be impressed with offers like football camp or a visit from a pro player.

Just puzzling out how to get good players can be an enthralling experience, and make hours fly by without you noticing. The recruiting system is truly the best part of the game.

Some Flaws

Although the game is overall deep and enriching, especially if you’re a fan of nitty gritty simulations, there are some flaws when you get deep into the game. As an example, your team may play differently than your plan, even when you’ve spent all your time practicing around it. It can feel as if you actually have very little to do with the success of your team.

Another minor issue is that while the gameplay is relatively smooth in coaching mode, when you switch to dynasty mode the same mechanics suck all the joy out of playing. Coaches lose a huge amount of points when they turn 60, and most coaches only gain 1-3 levels a year. Its not that the game is so much harder in this mode, it’s just a lot more grindy.

There’s nothing really wrong with the game, but if you play it for hundreds of hours you’ll likely find these small flaws in the game weighing on you more than average.
