Time trip back to the Roaring '20's in El Viento by Renovation. El Viento? That means "the Wind", and an ill wind definitely blows through this hot, 8 meg, horizontally scrolling action/adventure game. In 1928 New York City, a bunch of mobsters and a weird religious group have banded together to summon the vile wind demon, Hastur -- not good! You guide a beautiful young woman named Annet in an attempt to crush the crazies before they make the Big Apple rot.

Weapons of the Wind

As Annet, you get some impressive firepower. Your primary weapons are bladed boomerangs, but the Wind Spells do the real damage. You begin with Fire Balls, which enables you to throw flames. Throughout the game you acquire four more Spells such as Water Current, which shoots a destructive water current along the ground; Wind Cutter, an awesome wide-area blast; and the self-explanatory Explosion. For every two stages that you complete, you acquire another Spell, and you can toggle easily among them at any time.

ProTip: Always search breakable blocks for potions which restore Annet's life bar.

Stage Fright

El Viento is a hair-raising adventure that keeps you on your toes. There are eight stages with 20 scenes total. Annet begins on the mean streets of New York. She must then fight her way through the SpeakEasy night club and an automobile plant. Each level takes place in a different urban setting such as underground sewers and massive skyscrapers.

The place is overrun with hitmen and assorted mystic vermin, such as sneaky serpents and deadly birds. In the last area of each stage, Annet takes on some of the toughest boss creatures and devices around.

Play Up a Storm

Here's a game that's ultra tough, but fun and looks good, too. El Viento has splendid graphics and animation. The colors seem limited in the beginning levels, then the palette paints up a spectacular storm as the game progresses. Nice-looking cinema screens enrich the storyline after you complete a level.

Just like the wind (El Viento), this game moves fast! Annet is very easy to control, but this is NOT a game that you'll breeze through in one sitting. You're limited to three continues and the upper levels become positively spastic!

If you're hyped for a thumb-bustin' action game, give El Viento a spin. You just may be blown away!

Travel back to the 1920's to the time of the gangsters. As in the Valis series, you are a girl on a mission. Lots of intense action!

Renovation has a new side-scroller which looks and plays very much like the newer games in the Valis series. Good moves and challenging game play.

In this eye-catching eight-level action adventure game you, as the young heroine Annet, are whisked back to the Roaring '20s to duke it out with AI Capone and his gang of goons. Capone and company have been hired by the evil Hastur group to take over the Empire State Building so that they can use it as a temple to worship Evil. Your weapons come in the form of magical spells (i.e. fire balls and walls of water), and you must use them to pound Capone and his gang into the pavement before New York loses its most prominent landmark! EI Viento (the Tornado) will really chum you up.

El Viento is a 2D video game released by Wolf Team and published by Renovation Products for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis console. The game was launched in 1991 and is the second game of a trilogy including Earned Evans and Anetto Futatabi.

The game is considered an action platformer with smooth mechanics and a great story following a strong heroine. The main character is Annet, a Peruvian sorceress in a mafia-run of the 20’s. Annet has several power spells, but also a wild boomerang. The story has cut scenes and interesting characters, with Annet having to battle inner demons throughout the action. Her spells are fireballs, water currents, explosions, arrows and the wind cutter.

The story happens, to be more exact, in 1928 in New York City, where a mad religious leader, Henry, wants to awaken Hastur, a malevolent god. Annet descends of Hastur’s bloodline and attempts to stop the cult from resurrecting Hastur. The action is not boring and repetitive and this adds to the game’s great features.

The game is also challenging. It’s not easy, but not too difficult either. It’s just the perfect amount. The enemies are fast, so it’s impossible to dodge all their attacks, therefore get used to being hit by them. But thankfully Annet is a tough girl and enemies’ attacks do little damage to her. There are hidden healing points on each level, so just take your time and find them. The healing points are usually placed before having to encounter a stage boss.

The game for Sega Mega Drive/Genesis has pretty good graphics as well. The game is vivid and full of colors and features smooth animations and campy, pixelated explosions. The music is entertaining as well, fitting with the whole action. The soundtrack is upbeat, fast and gives the players an epic feel of the action.

Several reviews stated the game has too many characters for such a small plot. But let’s face it, even if at the end of the game you do not know the fates of some of the supporting cast, this is not a deal breaker. Sure, it would be fun to know what happens to everyone, but if the developers decided not to say, it shouldn’t be a big issue.

El Viento was a popular game when released and was rated with good feedback by GameSpot users. They offered a total average of 8.4, while the press and critics rated the game with a total average of 8.6 out of 10, even better than the users. GameFAQ users rated this game with an incredible 9.3 out of 10, turning this game into one of the best rated games on their web site.
