Effigy is the latest of what feels like an increasingly large number of retro style first-person shooters. I do not mean that as a negative at all, I grew up in the 90s so I have very fond memories of these types of first-person shooters. What is cool about this one though is that there are also MetroidVania elements at play here and even a bit of inspiration from the souls’ series of games too and that right there makes this very intriguing.

The Moon Has Gone Dark

The whole lore of the game is very fascinating and one of the main reasons that I really cannot wait to get through all of the chapters of this game. The setting of the game is a moon called, Gehenna and this moon is used as a prison. The thing is, the prisoners have escaped and they are now this cult that is worshiping a “being” called The Umbral As well as trying to survive and put a stop to this cult, you will also be finding out what really happened here and filling in all kinds of blanks to the story which is something that sounds very cool to me.

A Real 90s Charm

The gameplay of Effigy sounds very interesting to me. This is inspired by shooters from the 90s and at first glance, the games that come to my mind are two Nintendo 64 games in Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and Doom 64, not sure why, but I am just getting major N64 vibes from this game. It has a very low poly kind of look to it and that is something that really does tug on the nostalgia strings.

The thing with this is that unless you were around during this time, I am sure that the visuals of Effigy may look unappealing. 8 and 16-bit retro games get away with it, but I do know that many people think that these older polygon-based games just look outdated rather than old-school.

Blasting Your Way To Progress

They have already promised that Effigy is going to have a great selection of weapons. One that sounds really cool is the Pulse Buckler which is able to deflect rockets back at an enemy. The game is not just about shooting, there is a real exploration aspect to the gameplay where you will have to explore to find items and abilities so that you can progress further into the game.

We do know that this game is going to be released in episodes and each episode is going to feature a different part of Gehenna to explore. I think having a large area to explore is great, but I do wish that they were just giving us the game all at once.

So far it is looking pretty damn good for Effigy in my opinion. I love the whole idea of the game and the lore they have crafted has certainly gotten me interested in the plot. The gameplay looks like a lot of fun and I like how it has many old-school shooter elements to it, but at the same time, the whole Metroidvania aspect of the game is sure to make it much deeper than a mindless shooter.

Pros:

  • I think the setting and story of the game are excellent
  • If you enjoyed FPS games from the 90s, you need to take a closer look at this
  • There is a real charm to these low polygon visuals!
  • Plenty of creative and fun weapons for you to use

Cons:

  • The game is being released in chapters
  • That low poly look is not going to be cool for everyone
