Dotage is a charming and engaging turn-based village builder with roguelite elements. As the village elder, you must guide your fellow Pips in building and developing a prosperous settlement, all while fending off apocalyptic events foretold by an ominous prophecy.

With its cute pixel art style and deep worker placement mechanics, Dotage evokes fond memories of classics like Factorio and Rimworld, while still feeling fresh and unique. The core gameplay loop is addictively satisfying. Each turn, you assign your Pips to various tasks like farming, building, crafting tools, and more. It's crucial to balance productivity versus preparing for disasters.

Additionally, the memories of your elder character slowly unlock new buildings, resources, and gameplay mechanics. The roguelite elements provide excellent replayability, as the village layout and available structures vary with each new run.

Masterful Village Management

The worker placement mechanics are the true standout element of Dotage. With dozens of jobs that need doing each turn, from planting crops to crafting tools to exploring new regions, optimally assigning your Pips is engaging and strategic. You'll need to weigh short-term gains versus long-term investments.

For example, you could have a Pip harvest potatoes for quick food, or plant new crops that will yield more over time. Proper building placement also factors in. Putting a windmill near your farms boosts crop yields significantly. Dotage really captures the appeal of methodically building up your settlement through smart worker allocation.

Charming Pixel Art Style

Everything in Dotage, from the Pips to the buildings and environments, is rendered in a nostalgic, expressive pixel art style. The Pip villagers have cute, cartoonish designs and animations that give them personality.

Structures like houses and barns have subtle little touches like smoke coming from chimneys that really bring the village to life. The visual presentation evokes memories of other retro-inspired games like Stardew Valley. Overall, Dotage is just a delight to look at. The charming art style takes some of the sting out of the inevitable disasters your village will face.

Apocalyptic Turns

True to the prophecy your village elder foretold, apocalyptic events threaten your village frequently in Dotage. From outbreaks of poison and disease to earthquakes and fires, each turn brings new catastrophes to test your settlement planning abilities.

Trying to survive the deadly onslaughts while keeping your Pips productive provides a great sense of stakes and accomplishment. Enduring the disasters also unlocks new buildings and game features to experiment with in future runs.

Occasional performance issues when the village size scales up are really the only notable downside. Otherwise, Dotage admirably evokes the addictive magic of classics like Rimworld while still feeling unique. If you're a fan of the village builder and roguelite genres, this is an easy recommendation.
