DIRT 5

DIRT 5, is a racing video game and the fifth entry of the series developed by Codemasters. The game has been regarded and seen as a commercial success and critically acclaimed throughout the years. The franchise was seen as a pioneer of simulation, and realism on what pertained to rally racing. And with the latest entry DIRT 5, players had the opportunity to enjoy these accolades on Playstation, Xbox, and PC, or at least they thought so.

Dirt Poor Realism

If the franchise was once known for its realistic portrayal of rally racing DIRT 5, is the least realistic depiction from the series. From the steering that just feels off, to the weird interaction between drive-wheel joysticks, there’s just an avalanche of contending weaknesses that pile upon each other. For instance, the physics on this title seems very unrealistic in comparison to what Codemasters were able to do in earlier iterations.

Racing apart from the aforementioned observations is also extremely easily even by arcade standards, players who have experience with similar titles, might not find the game even remotely challenging, which ultimately might lead to thinking the game is boring and repetitive. Game modes and cars quickly become worn out and aren’t really something that might bring players back to the game.

To be fair to the game, the graphics are marvelous, and the level design in this game is on-point, unfortunately behind the beautiful exterior lies a game that is not very well optimized (at least for computers) and that doesn’t run as smooth as it should. And that seems to be the overall feeling of the game, a title that tries to hide its ineptitude behind an artificial facade of beauty.

Racing, and some more

DIRT 5, is a game that revolves around racing, and yet the narrative-driven career mode holds most of the weight of this title, along with the sound design, and ever-changing weather and environments that are visually stunning. Unfortunately, the game feels bloated with DJs, Podcasts, questionable writing, and a customization system that has to be tempered excessively to make the game feel natural.

Conclusion

Outside of career mode, there’s playgrounds mode which gives the game a little bit of freshness and longevity, but once you’re done with that, it’s hard to justify a reason to keep referring to DIRT 5, and not one of its earlier versions, or competitors as your go-to racing game.

The game feels inconsequential, and not challenging at all, even the career mode’s appeal wears off because it is too extensive. And to top of Nolan North, and Troy Bakers, some of the most iconic voices in gaming, are underutilized to the point where they barely feel like a part of the game.

6

DIRT 5, is probably the weakest game in the franchise, aside from the visuals which are stunning, and a cool-for-a-while career mode, there is nothing that justifies coming back to this game instead of its counterparts. For those looking for a racing game Forza Horizon, Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, and even earlier DIRT versions are much more suitable and fun than DIRT 5.
