If you enjoy third person action games, then Dead to Rights: Retribution might be just what you are looking for. Released in 2010 by Namco and Volatile Games, you take on the role of Jack Slate and his beloved dog, Shadow. The game was a popular release on the PS3 and Xbox 360 era, gaining a cult status for its interesting plot and its intriguing shooting style.

While the plot definitely is a bit on the basic side, writer Ben Fisher has done a fine job on creating a story that can feel worth caring about. The character and his connection to his beloved dog is a nice touch, too, really helping to elevate the story. Is Dead to Rights: Retribution, though, something worth playing a decade-plus after its initial release?

Die Hard (with a dog)

If you like your shooters to come with bombastic action, relatively generic plots, and lots of drama, you’ll have a fun time with Dead to Rights: Retribution. It carries all of the evocative madness of a 90s action movie, with the style very much akin to something you might find in a classic movie like Die Hard. In terms of gameplay, it has a similarity to most shooters of the time – cover, shooting, and taking on what feels like perfectly placed enemies until you reach your main objective.

The primary gameplay bonus is Shadow himself. Not many games of the era made your companion a dog, so the addition of Shadow played a huge role in making Dead to Rights: Retribution feel a bit more enjoyable than it actually was. For most, it probably lacks the polish and the class of a modern shooter, but the gameplay has enough intrigue to keep you coming back for a bit more.

Basic story, basic gameplay, good boy

Really, Dead to Rights: Retribution is a game that wasn’t exactly groundbreaking upon release. And today? It can feel a little hollow. Add in the ridiculous executions that the majority found were a little out of sync with the rest of the theme of the game, and there are some pretty serious holes to cover.

The real thing that makes Dead to Rights: Retribution stand out is the dog, really. The gameplay, the plot, the writing, and the characters all lack enough charm to make them jump off the page. With that in mind, then, you should really look to focus a bit more on the gameplay involving the dog if you do choose to play this. Having come out in the midst of the Gears of War series which popularised grandiose shooter games, Dead to Rights: Retribution just feels like a game that was a few years beyond where it really should have been in terms of style.
