Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense

I love the Dead Island series of games and when I heard that a mobile game called Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense I was all in. However, while I knew that this was not a first person shooter. Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense is pretty much Dead Island in name only.

Welcome Back Sam

The story of Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense is set during or right after the events of the first game. In all honesty, it does not really go into a lot of detail in this regard. Sam B and the other survivors are stuck on the island and they need to clear out zombies and rescue some other survivors before moving onto the next area. This is the basic idea of the game and what drives you forward. To be fair, while basic it is good enough for a mobile game and it does at the very least give you a reason to be doing what you are doing.

Zombie Tower Defense

It is no secret that this is a tower defense game as it is in the title, but I was actually surprised at how much depth was in Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense. This is one very challenging game and you will die time and time again. What I did like though was how when you died it was not really a huge deal and you could try again later.

The game sees you having to keep zombies away from people who need your help. The zombies get tougher and tougher as you progress and I liked the different zombie designs and how different, more powerful zombies would be introduced. The way you get different turrets as you play is really cool too. For example, you can get this one that shoots flaming tires and another that is all about electricity. Different zombies have a different weakness to different attacks so there is a lot of strategy at play here.

Swipe And Slash Action

As well as the tower defense action, Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense also lets you fight up close and personal. This is done with a series of taps and swipes. As this is a mobile game you will be tapping and swiping to use special moves, items and so on and I felt that this most of the time worked quite well.

I think it all depends on the device you are using. Playing this on my iPad I had no trouble at all, but when using my phone, I sometimes struggled to swipe a specific zombie if a few of them were huddled together.

What About The Progression?

Look this is a mobile game and as you would expect it is full to the brim of microtransactions and waiting times. However, I must admit that I do not think it is as bad as other games I have played. I would compare it to a game like Clash Royale where you have upgrade cards, loot boxes, gems and so on that you can earn in the game or spend real world money on.

I have put a lot of time into this without spending a penny, but like most mobile games the further you get the harder it is to progress by just playing the game and earning items through gameplay. Look, I get it, this is the way that free to play mobile gaming is so I am not going to be too harsh on Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense when every other mobile game out there does it too.

I must admit I was a little unsure of what to expect with Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense. Especially when I died a million times when I first started playing it. However, this is a fun little time waster and while it is Dead Island in name only, I do think if you are a fan of zombie games it is worth checking out.

Pros:

  • The art style is pretty well done
  • I loved the different zombie designs
  • Some of the turrets are a lot of fun
  • Has some hack and slash elements in the game too
  • It is fun seeing some of the old gang back

Cons:

  • Some of the touch controls are a bit finicky on smaller devices
  • You can only get so far without spending money

Game Reviews

Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense is what happens when you have a popular franchise that makes the jump to mobile. While this has the Dead Island name, this is not what you would expect from a game that is set in the Dead Island universe!

The Story

Really the name and the story are the only things that tie Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense to the original Dead Island game. While there is not a lot of story here, it does move the game along. The story is set right after the events of the first game, Sam B along with the rest of the gang find themselves stuck on an island.

Before they can move on to the next area. Other people need their help and they need to kill a bunch of zombies in order to do this. While rather shallow, as a fan of the original Dead Island I do like the little bit of story that is here.

The Presentation

This is a top down kind of game as it is a Tower Defense game after all. So, there is only so much detail that you are going to get from a game like this. However, I do feel that Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense is not a bad looking game at all and I do especially like how there are different varieties of zombies in the game and they do all look pretty darn cool and gross!

The Gameplay

From a gameplay point of view, Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense could not be any different to the original Dead Island. This is a tower defense, survival kind of game and it does what it does very well. Each map has survivors on it and you need to save them, but in order to do this, you have to fight off the what feels like never-ending waves of zombies!

The game has a lot of trial and error and in the early parts of the game, you will die many times! It can get frustrating, but there is something about it that is fun. Using the right “towers” to take down zombies is key as certain zombies will have a weakness to a certain kind of tower so there is some strategy in play here. Tower positioning and selection for me is the key to having a successful round. One way that Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense tries to change things up is with its action scenes. There are sections in the game that require you to tap and swipe in order to save someone and fight off a zombie. These sound like they are tacked on I know, but when this does happen it is quite exciting.

Now as this is a mobile game as you would expect it has its blood covered hand out wanting your money. There are upgrades you can buy, time you can buy and so on that will make getting through the game easier. I though, played this without spending a penny and had fun doing so. In all fairness, Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense is no worse than any other mobile game I have played when it comes to microtransactions.

Final Thoughts On Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense

7

I was not expecting much at all from Dead Island: Survivors - Zombie Tower Defense. However, this is a fun and competent tower defense style game. It is challenging and it does have microtransactions. At the same time though, there is plenty of fun to be had here and you can play it for free so it is worth having a look at.

Pros:

  • I really liked the presentation
  • Plenty of cool turrets to use
  • It is more strategic than you would think
  • I liked how it tied into the first Dead Island game
  • It has some cool action swiping and tapping scenes

Cons:

  • It does have lots of microtransactions
  • Not the FPS blood fest you may have been hoping for
