Humans have always had an interest in things that they don’t fully understand. Its only natural that we as a species are both curious and frightful of beings that seems to spawn from beyond our comprehension. The monsters, ghosts, and supernatural creatures that are of Lovecraftian origin have seen increasing interest in all forms of media in the last twenty years, video games included. In fact, video games as a medium are arguably the best form to experience a Lovecraftian horror in, as it can continue to instill fear in your imagination while also exposing you to some true horrors right before your eyes. One of the next steps for Lovecraftian games will be the upcoming Cthulhu: Books of the Ancients, which is set to release in within the next few years (2022-2023). Though little is known of it at the moment, there are a lot of strong ideas that could make this game one of the most unsettling, unique, and deeply bone-chilling to be designed thus far.

Bold Ideas

Although this title is sure to honor the core ideas of horror and FPS gameplay, it looks like it will be much more closely related to games that have a point-and-click type of adventure. Given that this game will have an aesthetic entirely dedicated to detective novels mixed with exploration, it definitely seems like there will be a great balance of mystery, suspense, and horror. You’ll be taking on the role of a detective that’s determined to find six missing children at the University of Miskatonic.

Given the trailers released so far and all the previews, the world looks like it will be intricately designed with a healthy dose of surreal direction. Additionally, much similar to other occult-centered games like Call of Cthulhu (or even Bloodborne purely for the looks). While we don’t know that much just yet, the game looks overall promising for the concepts seen so far.

Gameplay Still a Mystery

The true core concepts are all here, no doubt – we know it will be a first person puzzle-solving mystery game, but beyond that the specifics of Books of the Ancients are relatively unknown. Again, all the teasers and previews look incredibly promising. The overall atmosphere appears to be strong, brooding, and mysterious (unsurprisingly), and the controls look like they’ll be standard and comprehensive, nothing that truly breaks the boundaries of traditional gameplay but familiar and accessible nonetheless.

Finally, with so little available about the overall narrative, its hard to say what you can expect out of the story. Regardless, it looks like SimFabric is putting together something that will test players mettle when going up against Lovecraftian horror without any weapons to fall back upon.

Bottom Line

While we don’t know much about the title as a whole right now, it definitely looks like a work that is worth checking out throughout its development cycle.

It could easily be a piece of Lovecraftian horror that becomes a staple in video games.
