Crystal Crisis is a falling block puzzle game with some exciting new features that lift it above the average puzzle fighter. In it, you can play one of 20 characters, including many familiar faces from other games by the developer, Nicalas. These include Isaac and Curly Brace. There’s also a few from other universes, such as Astro Boy.

Most of these characters are locked, and you’ll need to perform specific actions to unlock them. As an example, going through the tutorial unlocks Johnny Turbo, from the game TurboDuo. You’ll then be set to start exploring the game.

If you’ve never played this style of game before, look no farther than the game that inspired Crystal Crisis, Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. This old school classic was the inspiration to Crystal Crisis, and shares a lot of common ground. Just like any new game however, Nicalas has added quite a few twists to keep you on your toes and make things fresh.

Burst moves add spice to this puzzler

A new feature to this style of game is burst moves. These are special abilities your characters have that can help you defeat enemies and progress through the game. Each character has a unique burst move, with varying levels of usefulness.

Akuji, from Akuji the Demon can swap boards with his opponent, which can really help in certain situations. This skill is powerful, but can only be used when the skill bar is full. Other characters, such as Tina Hawkins can use a weaker version of their skill at 1/3 skill levels. This means you can use the skill earlier and more often, but it won’t be as good as the full strength skill.

Crystal mode invites strategy

Another unique twist on this game is that you can use a grid-wrap ability that lets you send crystals to the other side of the board. This can make playing different modes incredibly fun, but if you’d rather not mess with this it can also be turned off.

Lots of different modes for gaming fun

The developers also made several different game modes, with different challenges to keep things interesting. This goes beyond the standard single-player and multi-player options. There’s also modes that change game play itself.

One of the most fun options out of these is memory mode, which hides the color of any crystal pieces you drop. When this mode is on, you need to rely on your memory to help you win the game. Other modes include inline mode and arcade mode. There are 5 different modes at all to help keep you entertained.

This is a solid puzzle game that has a few twists to keep it unique. While it isn’t as dazzling as Tetris' 99, it still has plenty of options to keep you busy. If you’re a big fan of Nicalas games or are simply looking for a new puzzle game to try, this falling block game has plenty to keep you busy.

Pros:

  • Twists on the usual puzzle game
  • Lots of unlockable content
  • 5 unique modes to play in

Cons:

  • Not as refined as other puzzle games
