Horror is an incredibly complex genre, there is way too much horror stuff made in the media, but only a handful of those products are actually good. And things get even more complicated when it comes to video games, as it is surprisingly hard to find a game that can scare everyone. However, the interactive element does make it a little bit easier to get immersed into the horror. When it comes to movies you can always cover your ears and look away, but in video games, you have to go through all the horror. Corpse Party BloodCovered is the remake of a horror classic originally released in 1996.

We know the original game is a cult classic, so it’s really natural to see a remake so many years later, but is it any good? Well, we are here to talk about that, without spoiling much about the game itself, so let’s get started.

About the game

Corpse Party: BloodCovered is a different take on the original game, you could consider this to be more of a reimagining than a remake. Changing a lot of elements from the original game, it’s hard to understand why they chose this route for a new release of a classic game that already has a cult level of following.

Corpse Party: BloodCovered takes the player on an excellent trip through the Japanese horror genre. Any horror fan knows that this is quite a unique genre, and this game makes it really accessible. The gameplay is pretty simple, you explore, find things around, and solve puzzles, but it's not as simple as it may seem. In most games, you solve the puzzles and in doing so you progress, but when it comes to Corpse Party: BloodCovered things are quite different. Depending on how you solve the puzzles, the items you find, the clues you gather, and many other small factors the ending you get will be affected, and there are quite a few endings available.

The main plot is that a group of Friends at Kisaragi Academy, their teacher, and the little sister of the main character unknowingly take part in an evil ritual. Thinking it was just a ritual to preserve their friendship even though one of them is going to be transferred to another school. But all hell breaks loose from this point on, it’s a true horror these people are about to live.

Complex storylines, multiple routes

This game was a pioneer in complex storylines and puzzle-solving with multiple routes available depending on how you progress. Kinda like the old multiple-choice games that take you on different routes depending on every step you take. But thanks to the new art style this game is more similar to titles like the Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, but with a different exploration interface.

But one thing these franchises have in common is that they both seem to be chill anime games on the surface, but they get horrifyingly twisted as you progress.

Corpse Party: BloodCovered is not a bad game by no means, and given the source material, it would have been really hard to ruin it. But as a reimagining of the classic game, it fails to deliver the same impact as it once did. The art style change really affects the game a lot, not to mention that there are a lot of changes made to the game, so it’s not really playing the same game. You could give it a try in the new version of this game called Corpse Party: BloodCovered… Repeated Fear.

Pros:

  • Better gameplay than the original
  • Great story
  • A lot of content

Cons:

  • Too many changes
  • Disappointing
  • Great idea, alright execution
