You remember Chuck Rock, a small Neanderthal with a big club. Well, Chuck went forth and multiplied, and begot Chuck Junior, a fine young specimen of a cave baby. CJ's taking a few baby steps in his first video game, which features some cool effects but lacks Chuck Senior's more highly evolved game play.

Chucking Around

Junior's got a big problem. Chuck Senior and his wife, Ophelia, were parent-napped by none other than the infamous Brick Jagger. Waaaaahhhhh. To save the 'rents, the precocious cave crawler sets forth in six multi-zone levels of single-player, side-scrolling action/adventure gaming.

ProTip: Bash the Boss at the end of the Wacky Waterfall Stage by swinging your club and knocking the little creatures he throws at you back at him.

Being a baby and all, Chuck Junior's just a little tyke still in diapers. He toddles along through dinosaur- infested prehistoric landscapes, defending himself in the time-honored caveman tradition -- with a club!

Don't Cry Over Spilt Milk

Son of Chuck's game play is simple -- perhaps even somewhat prehistoric. Chuckie can jump, swing his club to bash attackers, and climb on top of it to avoid dangerous obstacles. The controls are as simple as the A, B, C's -- one button for each of Junior's three actions. He moves from one end of a level to the other, hopping over obstacles, bashing enemies, and grabbing power-ups. The problem is the lack of items to find in each area. Plus, once you've found them, crawling across the same landscape one more time makes you ready for naptime.

  • To roll safely across the flames in the Lively Lava, jump on top of the boulder, then turn and face the opposite way of the direction you want to move. Press Left or Right to walk and you'll roll to safety on the boulder.
  • Hitch a ride on a wave to make it across the Wacky Waterfalls' spiked balls.

The little guy lives and dies by the damage system: After taking a certain number of hits, he loses a life. Awwwww, his damage meter is sooooo cuuuute. It's a big baby bottle filled with milk. Each time CJ takes a hit, some milk drains out. When the milk's gone, so's Chuckie.

Graphics and Sound: Chuckie's in Love

The graphics in Chuck Rock's first video game progeny aren't quite as vivid (in color or animation) as the original. The sprites are smaller during most of the game, but the backgrounds are lush and include original prehistoric landscapes. Son of Chuck also features some very cool effects, like extremely large rotating and scaling sprites.

  • When this large bird appears on the horizon in the Stone Age Suburbs, hop on board one of its big feet. CJ can't swim, but he's safe on top of the bird's claws.
  • Don't get squashed by huge roaming dinos.

Soundwise, Chuckie's lullabies won't make the charts, but they'll have you tapping your club. Chuckie has a nice annoying wail and a decent tantrum that's sure to bug even seasoned parents.

Keep on Chucking

Son of Chuck's just like most kids...better in some ways than their parent, not as good in others. The original Chuck Rock had lots of prehistoric humor, clever and vivid graphics, and very creative and challenging game play. Chuck Junior has prehistoric humor and clever graphics with innovative effects, but the game play's a tad on the juvenile side. It won't challenge highly evolved gamers.

Game Reviews

Chuck Rock is showing off his bouncing baby boy in Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck for the Genesis. Virgin's new arrival must brave the wilds of a prehistoric land with only his club to protect him. He can also scare enemies away with his piercing temper tantrums! Along the way a triceratops and an ostrich will give baby Chuck a lift through the more difficult levels. If he's a good boy, he'll get to play in the bonus levels.

Not being the greatest fan of Chuck Rock, Son of Chuck really surprised me: the graphics (especially the scaling and rotation in some of the effects) are some of the best for the system! The animations of little Chuck are cute, but in the end the whole effect becomes repetitious. Great bosses and sound effects, though.

8.0

The original Chuck Rock was rather fun but this one really takes the cake. I've never seen special effects like these on the Genesis. While it may be simulated scaling and rotation, the effect is fantastic! The club-wielding baby may be an unlikely hero, but he's cool. It's more fun than a barrel of brontosauruses!

7.0

Son of Chuck is so cute and adorable, you'll want to grab him and hug him. Game play is great with his funny club attack. The game features excellent animation and sound and the scaling and rotation on some levels actually look better than some Super NES effects. Lots of cute dinosaurs, too! A solid sequel.

7.0

Prehistoric power strikes again with an unlikely hero, Son of Chuck. The little guy is adorable and so are the well drawn cartoon-style backdrops and other critters. With the same look and a better feel than Chuck Rock, this is a great sequel. The bonus rounds add to the appeal. The action may become repetitive but it's fun!

The opening cartoon for this game is dynamite, and the game itself ain't too shabby either. The control is a little stiff, so keep the punching bag handy. There is also a lot of humor to be found in the details of the levels.

This is yet another example of how Game Gear can do justice to a game on a diminished platform! Chuck Rock 2 has basically everything the Genesis has! Huge levels, lots of technique and great animations are the high-light! One quibble, though: the control is loose, and can make things a bit aggravating at times.

A Chip Off the Old Block

Believe it or not, Chuck Rock is a daddy! He is the proud father of a bouncing baby boy who loves adventure as much as his old dad.

Son of Chuck is the tale of this little babys quest through a prehistoric world. Armed with only a club and a nasty temper tantrum, "Son" must face mischievous apes, deadly dinos, and other strange sights.

Son of Chuck is an impressive use of software. This game has great graphics along with rotation and scaling! The animation is sweet, and will have you laughing for hours. Son of Chuck is a very good game in terms of playability as well. Truly one to look for!

This is the continuation of Chuck's adventures. Six new levels with perfect graphics, but still there is not enough passion. You act as the first part's main hero’s absolutely young son. I recommend this game to all the fans of excellent adventures.

When Chuck Rock is kidnapped, there’s only one person brave enough and nasty enough to rescue him his six-month-old son. In CHUCK ROCK II: Son of Chuck, you assume the role of the bratty infant as he heads into the brutal prehistoric world in search of his missing father. Even though you’ve only got one tooth, you’re still pretty dangerous; especially with your powerful club.

As you work your way through six worlds, and four bonus games, you’ll come across all kinds of friends and foes. You’ll meet Geoff the Strongman, Vinny Venus Flytrap, and Bird Reynolds, to name a few. With fun gameplay, entertaining graphics, and plenty of prehistoric pandemonium, CHUCK ROCK II: Son of Chuck is worth your while.
