A callback to some of the most popular and intense arcade games of old, Choi challenges players with its fast-paced and highly addictive gameplay. Featuring a bizarre plot involving a time-space-bending demon and some hamburgers, Choi is precisely the kind of bizarre game that some players love so much.

Despite its basic visuals and somewhat repetitive gameplay, Choi manages to remain fresh thanks to its strong art direction and an oddly captivating plot. Sure, it might seem like a mismatch of ideas thrown together into a single oddity of a game, but Choi balances its weirdness with actual gameplay value to deliver an experience that's absolutely worth playing.

Simple Fun

One of the main appeals of games like Choi is how accessible its gameplay is. Much like the usual endless runners like PAKO Forever, the action in Choi takes place in large, usually simple levels where the player must navigate their character and avoid some of the usual obstacles.

In Choi's case, the enemies players will face are none other than something called the "Space-Time Police." After all, Choi has space-time powers that allow him to travel across dimensions, which is a huge no-no in the eyes of the powers that be.

Top-Down Action

The game plays in a top-down perspective, offering an eagle-eye perspective of a good chunk of every level. As for the gameplay, well, that might be one of Choi's most notable strong suits.

Each level has the player outrunning the space-time police using any means necessary. What this usually means is that Choi has to use his powers and kick rocks to temporarily stun the enemy officers. It's a fairly simple concept, and one that admittedly repeats itself just a bit too much, but, at the very least, the game is over before you notice any major repetition.

"Simplicity" seems to be the name of the game for Choi, and that's a maxim that also applies to its visuals.

Naturally Blocky

There's a certain appeal that minimalistic games have that's hard to emulate. The fact that Choi has such a unique plot, coupled with the basic nature of its gameplay, almost makes me think of other weird classics like Katamari Damacy. However, the visuals in this game are even more rudimentary than that.

The stylistic choice of featuring as few textures as possible works well with the game's overall lighting. Sure, it might not look as gorgeous as something like TUNIC, but since the games are so radically different, we should be willing to overlook a bit of rawness in Choi's visual aspects.

Seeing as this is just the first entry into what's set to be a series, we can only hope that Choi is just a teaser for what developer Kevin Kim has in store for us.
