Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate takes the beloved series back to its roots with a linear adventure that's full of action and darkly supernatural enemies. While later games in this franchise involved a lot of backtracking and exploration, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate offers a straightforward quest to defeat Dracula and his minions while obtaining sweet vengeance. The gameplay is cathartic fun and the story offers background for key characters, making this a worthwhile game for action fans.

Main Game Features

  • Quick and fierce sidescrolling action
  • Play as four different characters
  • 9 unique bosses

Story

The narrative in Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is a sequel to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, taking place over two decades after the events of that game. After a prologue that catches players up with some lore about the famed vampire slayer Gabriel Belmont, the game jumps forward twenty years, continuing the story with Gabriel's grandson, Simon. Looking for vengeance after his mother is killed by Dracula's army, Simon heads to the vampire king's castle, eager for confrontation.

In later chapters, the story continues with other various time jumps, with chapters featuring popular characters like Alucard and Trevor Belmont. Like Simon, Alucard and Trevor explore the crumbling ruins of Dracula's castle, but for different reasons. Alucard, under the foggy veil of amnesia, travels to the castle with blurry motivation. Like Simon, Trevor also heads to Dracula's castle for revenge, this time in the name of his fallen mother. While these plot points are interesting, the story is told in a fragmented way, where it's easy to see the twists coming.

Gameplay

While the original Castlevania: Lords of Shadow game felt like a rip-off of God of War II, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate feels like a direct throwback to predecessors like Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. Instead of constantly backtracking and searching for new items, you usually forge a path through enemies by killing anything in your way, only stopped occasionally by bosses and other gameplay elements. The game has four different story acts to beat, plus a prologue and an ending, with each act offering a small twist.

In each act, you control a different character, including Gabriel, Simon, Alucard, and Trevor. All four characters are powerful in battle and quick on their feet, but each one also possesses unique abilities. For example, Alucard can turn into a wolf or mist to solve puzzles, while Trevor utilizes dark and light magic. Some acts contain more platforming and puzzles, while others are full of combat and boss fights. Despite this variety, the castle eventually starts to blend together, as areas feel bland and repetitive. However, you'll never be very challenged by the game, as tons of checkpoints and health refills make it hard to fail even in the toughest boss fights.

Conclusion

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate is a pleasurable continuation of the events in the previous game, presented with decent graphics and fun combat. While the story is cool and has some interesting characters, the way it is split up makes it hard to stay invested.

Even though fighting is fun, the gameplay can become repetitive due to lazy level design. However, with everything considered, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate gives players a quick and easy way to slay some monsters and face down Dracula.
