Castle Morihisa

I have a real thing for ancient Japan so a game like Castle Morihisa is always going to be something that I give the time of day to. As I write this the game is not yet complete, but there is a demo out there and I have seen a lot of what this game has to offer. That is why today I thought I would try and get some more eyes on this rogue-like deckbuilding game and share my thoughts on what I have experienced so far.

Making Your Way To The Castle

The title, Castle Morihisa is not just the name of the game, it is the actual destination of our warriors who are trying to find out what is going on.

The game has a feudal Japanese setting with some classic Japanese folklore style monsters and creatures thrown in for good measure. It has been rumored that someone is trying to take control of the Shogun and you are sent to discover what is really going on.

Stay Classy People

In this game, you have four classes that you can play as. What I like about Castle Morihisa having four classes instead of eight or even more is that it makes things so much more focused. The four classes in question are monk, samurai, ninja, and Onmyoji. Each class has their own deck to make a build from and there are over 300 cards that you can build your deck from. With plenty of new skills and stuff to learn along the way, you can get pretty creative and have a lot of fun trying to build the ultimate deck that will let you destroy all the foes that stand in your way. As you have probably guessed, action is what this game is all about and you pretty much go from one fight to the next so it is fast-paced.

Just Like You Would Imagine

I love the whole presentation of what Castle Morihisa has going on. It has that ancient Japanese look to it, but it also has a bit of fantasy and anime about its style as well. The characters look fantastic and I love the detailed portrait’s that they have. I do wish that there was more animation when it came to the battles as you just see the cards over the enemy and whatever damage or effect is caused. However, to be fair that would probably slow the pace of the game down so I can see why they went for the style that they did here.

Even though as I write this you can only play the demo, Castle Morihisa is still a game that I highly recommend that you guys check out.

If you have any interest in deck-building games, I am pretty sure that you will want to play the full game after checking the demo. I am having a hard time thinking of another rogue-like deck-building game that has a pace as fast as this one does!

Pros:

  • I love the feudal Japanese setting
  • The creatures from Japanese folklore are really cool
  • You have four classes and hundreds of cards to create your build with
  • The gameplay is fast-paced, challenging, and a ton of fun

Cons:

  • There could be a bit more animation
  • As is the case with most deck builders, there may be a lot of trial and error here
