Call of Duty is definitely one of those game series that came to stay and has established a place among the elite of best selling and most popular games since its early days. Of course, that war and action games have been around since way before even the first Call of Duty was released, but Call of Duty made it big time in establishing as the king of war games. We'll check Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, and see why even though they were released at around the same time, Call of Duty became more popular than Battlefield 2.
About the plot
While the first Call of Duty game had us constantly switching characters and different moments, this time is different. Call of Duty 2: Big Red one has placed the player as a soldier in the first infantry division of the USA, known as Big Red One. One of the most popular divisions due to the number of missions they were sent to. You're back in WWII, and it's more intense than ever before.
Immersion
Since the game has you playing as the same soldier throughout the entire campaign, you can feel more attached to the characters around you. Since you’re not constantly switching characters and squads, you really get to feel the pressure of being a part of the Big Red One. The narrative and the story development is much better in The Big Red One than in the first title. Since you play three years' worth of war missions here, you get to be with your squad companions for a long time.
Gameplay
The intense experience from the game doesn’t come just from the quality of the story, but the gameplay itself is rock solid too. There are different weapons and different ways to use them as the recoil and aiming modes are different. There are some moments where you even get to drive tanks or use airplane turrets. The controls are easily adjustable and there are a lot of customization options, so it can adapt to every player as much as needed. There are enough weapons to make the different missions of the game feel varied and never get boring or repetitive.
Call of Duty: Big Red One is probably the best FPS war game of 2005. It's up there against the best Medal of Honor games, and considering the IP has been around for way less time, it's a great success. The gameplay is accompanied by a nice story and development. Being a part of the Big Red One makes you feel like every mission is important, and it also allows you to go in different types of missions.
Some things could be improved, especially in the technical aspect. Since there are some glitches where you can get stuck in the map, and the radar navigation could be better. But in most other aspects it is a solid game, you can have a lot of fun in these exciting missions. And if you get the Xbox or the PS2 version you get an online mode which is a big plus.
