The damage will affect the vehicle's performance and appearance.

Burning Road features five viewing camera angles: first person, front seat and three different distances behind the car. After the race you can watch the replay from multiple angles. One of the most incredible angles is the helicopter camera view. Two players can compete using the Sony link.

Game Reviews

With the incredible 3-D capabilities of the PlayStation, racing games are a natural for it It began with Ridge Racer in the early days of the system, and there has been a steady stream of quality racers since then.

The latest game to try to win over driving fans' hearts is Playmates Interactive's Burning Road.

"But wait a minute!" I hear you cry. There are so many racing games on the market already. What makes this one so special?" Well, my little cherubs, every racing game needs some kind of a hook, and Burning Road is no exception. Right from the start.

Burning Road stands out with its lighthearted, almost wacky, approach to racing.

You'll probably first notice the announcer who does his best to convince you that he's the Jim Carrey of racing commentators. From his constant comments that you have made a "cool choice" concerning your car, transmission, etc. to his blatant use of the phrase "All righty then," this guy proves that he's a certified nut.

The selection of vehicles also stands (and the one truck) have big "monster" wheels on them for off-road action. This leads to some interesting controls, but it's fairly easy to get used to it

One thing that is noticeable on a few of the tracks is the weather conditions. On one track, it started to rain during the race. Water begins to accumulate on the ground making it slippery. Another track leads you right through a snow storm. There's something very cool about seeing snowflakes fly past the camera as you barrel head-on into the storm.

The graphics look great and while there is a bit of pop-up, it isn't terribly noticeable. The game definitely moves fast. Once you get on a straight path and hit a jump, you fly.

Burning Road is certainly not the first PlayStation racing game, and I can guarantee you that it will not be the last. Still, its high-quality and goofy style make it stand out enough to make it a contender.

Burning Road starts out strong, rewing its engine with fast-paced races and souped-up speedsters. But its lack of solid features will drive you to disappointment with only six easy tracks and no two-player split-screen option.

From the tunnels to the chopper overhead, the game's look rips off Ridge Racer, while the music screeches with the worst theme song in video game history. You can choose one of four vehicles, including a monster truck, but their mechanics don't go beyond speed and handling. BR's not a bad arcade-style racer, but its fun-warranty runs out after a couple of days, relegating it to the rental bin.

ProTips:

  • Press the brake at the beginning of sharp turns to avoid spinning out.
  • Use the traffic icon to see cars behind you, then cut them off before they can pass.

Like PlayStation owners really needed another driving game? I mean, come on! Well, I suppose they could use a Daytona-meets-Dirt Dash--with a hint of Frenchiness. And that's exactly what Burning Road is.The game, although released by Playmates, is by two companies named "Toka" and "FunSoft," who apparently felt the need to Frenchify the game.

AH the voiceovers are from some weird French (Belgian?) guy who says things like, "Decided like this" when you choose an option. This is backed up by the incredible "Burning Road" song, which is very spazzed-out indeed.

The graphics are among the smoothest and most solid ever seen on a PlayStation racing game and the gameplay is equally solid.Three (possibly more) tracks, varying weather and lots of cars. Cool!
