The idea behind Bug Riders is innovative-something that is different from the norm--but in this case, change is bad. I absolutely hated the cropping of the bug to gain speed. In case you don't know, cropping is when you hit an animal for it to gain speed (i.e., like a horse). Let's just stick with a standard "press the button and hold it" acceleration that practically EVERY other racing game has. It's what we're used to as gamers. When something like this comes along, we don't know what to do. Even with repeated tries I had trouble getting used to it. Aside from that major annoyance, the game is pretty fresh. The graphics are very nice--everything from the lighting effects to the level design is sweet. The music fits the game well and does a good job of setting the mood. The sound was good, but when you over-cropped the bug it would make this annoying yelp noise that sounded like a dying dog (just another annoying thing l associated with the control). It makes me mad that the control is the way it is because the game has some real promise. The characters and story development are pretty cool and the different courses are done well, but then you use that weird cropping acceleration technique and all that good stuff falls apart. It's too bad. I'd say rent it first and if the control doesn't bug you, then go for it.

I really wanted to like this game, since it tries to be so different from all the other racing titles. Trouble is, it's too different for its own good. The novel acceleration system, for instance, has you whipping your bug with a riding crop to make it go faster (just as in the Intellivision classic Horse Racing). Beat your bug too much, and it slows to a near hover. It makes flying through the tiny checkpoints that much more frustratingly tough.

What were they thinking when they made this game? The redeeming features in Bug Riders are few and far between. The graphics are about par for the PS but this game isn't very fun. Talk about limited gameplay. You ride a dragonfly, shooting enemies and flying through floating checkpoints in a race to the finish...boring. Whoever came up with the idea for BR needs to be smacked harder than the bugs. Dude, this game rots!

Here's a game that I've looked forward to for a while, but it ended up being a disappointment in the end. The music is pretty good, enough that they even cut a short CD demo. The gameplay, however, lacks stability. It's weird enough to have to slap your bug around to go faster, but requiring loop pass-throughs with a crazy time limit hurts the experience. You spend more time fighting the control and less time enjoying the game.

Game Reviews

If you are the type of gamer who feels that racing on the backs of giant bugs is something you need in a title. Bug Rider is right up your arthropod. It features true 3-D racing with more than 22 characters each with signature weapons and racing styles. There are six unique racing environments, complete with branching courses and evolving tracks. Distinct bug/character relationships exist in the title which influence gameplay. There are also more than 16 spectacular weapons including defensive and rear attacks to use and enjoy in Bug Rider. With all of these heart-pumping features, this title is one of the stars to look for in the upcoming E issues of EGM.

Well, the concept of this game is pretty evident from the title. Wiry mess with racing cars, when you can just hop on the backs of bugs? In Bug Riders, you can choose from up to 22 characters, many of whom have different weapons, traits and abilities that are influenced by the racing insect they are riding.

GT Interactive promises this offbeat racing game will have silky-smooth animation, with the game clocking in at 30 frames per second. There are six different courses, a Practice Mode and a two-player "Deathmatch" Mode via split-screen.

Bug Riders puts you on the backs of giant flying insects in six racing environments. Not only do the bugs move around each other, they can go over or under challengers to get ahead. You can whip them into the lead, just like you would a race horse, or use weapons for forward or rear attacks. The PlayStation game will offer two-player split-screen death matches, while the Win 95 version will be networkable for multiplayer competition. Gentlemen, start your bugs!

You might have thought that Earthworm Jim's flying cows and puppies were the weirdest video game elements ever, but GT Interactive is gunning for the title with this simple concept: bug racing. You know, sitting on a flying insect and crossing the finish line first. But as this game amply proves, weird doesn't always mean good.

BugRiders takes a can of Raid to the Panzer Dragoon formula by making your ride work against you like a spoiled horse. Not only does the bug not want to go where you steer, but, of all things, you have to whip it to make it fly fasten Inflict too much pain and it refuses to fly at all. To add insult to frustration, you re on a rail system, so only a small fraction of the steering is yours to control anyway.

You think we re kidding? Fear not--this isn't the April Fools issue, any more than BugRiders is...what's the word?,..fun.

In all fairness to the insect kingdom, BugRiders features intense, very fluid visuals on six distinct levels that range from underground caverns to rain forests to beaches. The sound's a mixed bag with goofy music on some levels and nearly exciting beats on others. While there are some cool weapons to pick up as well as a good variety of bug steeds, because of bad control, praising these aspects is like toweling off the Titanic. BugRiders' next stop: a roach motel.

ProTips:

  • The Greenfire's your best weapon for taking out bugs with a single hit. It's limited, though, so wait until you have a sure lock.
  • In the two-player mode, it's always to your advantage to stay behind your opponent.
  • You can only carry one special weapon at a time, so be careful not to enter an armament gate if you already have something good.
  • The first hint that someone's behind you is stray fire. Be sure to keep your finger poised on your shields at all times.
