To say that Bang Average Football is a game that feels like it was made for me is more of an understatement than saying Cristiano Ronaldo is pretty good at football. Mixing an arcade football game (yes football, I am not calling it soccer) with a light RPG adventure was such a clever idea! To be fair, I have seen this before, not just with football, but with other sports as well, but this is one of the best examples I have experienced and if they can just tighten things up on the field, this could very well be a 10/10 game for me!
Grassroots Football
The story that Bang Average Football is full of charm and if you like football, you will get such a kick out of it. We get to create our own little player and we can be a man or a woman, I have only played as the male character, but I am going to do a second playthrough to see if things change. We become the player/coach of a very bad team and it is up to us to raise the team to glory! It is a fun and charming story that I had a blast with and I had a smile on my face most of the time I was playing it, it has a real wholesome vibe that I loved.
More Than On The Pitch
I want to start by talking about the RPG stuff that Bang Average Football has going on. Off the field, you will be tasked with securing new players, keeping people happy, getting sponsors, improving the stadium, and trying to get as many people behind you as you can. You will do a bit of traveling too and end up with all kinds of fun side quests. It is like a light RPG, but I feel that works to the games advantage. I just had such a great time with this, I legit could not stop playing it and I for one liked that it had RPG gameplay, but not super deep and complicated RPG gameplay.
Tiki-Taka
Oh man, I so wanted Bang Average Football to play like the classic Sensible World Of Soccer and when I saw the trailer for the game, that is what I thought I was getting, but that is not the case. The on the pitch football action here takes a while to get used to. It has a kind of manic feel about it in that your passes just seem to go where they want, there is an automatic and a manual way of passing, but despite playing the game for a while, I just kind of try to get the ball up the pitch as fast as I can and shoot. The shooting mechanics work great, if they can just get the passing to be more accurate, they are onto an absolute winner here. That is not to say it is bad at all, you just have to get used to it, and to be fair, I came into this expecting Sensible Soccer and that was on me. It is worth noting that you do not have to play the story, you can just jump in and play football either against the AI or with up to three buddies.
A 10 On The Charm Scale
The whole presentation and general style of Bang Average Football is just so freaking adorable! I love the pixel art and the cute way that the characters, the towns, the stadiums, and everything else looks! This is just such a great game and a game that is easy to get lost in. I know this is going to sound crazy, but I found myself “lost” in this game. By that I mean I was able to see myself actually in the shoes of my little football coach and that got me so invested in this thing.
I love Bang Average Football! I know that it is not perfect, but once I got to grips with how I was to actually play the football, I fell even more in love with this. This is a game that 100 percent needs to come on the Nintendo Switch, I feel that this would be a perfect fit for that console. Actually, this game is so good, that they need to get it on PlayStation and Xbox as well. If you love football, you have to give this game a try.
Pros:
- The story is so charming
- I got very invested in taking my club and players to the top
- Once you get used to it, the football is fun
- This is one of the best sports RPGs I have ever played
Cons:
- The passing does take a while to get used to
- I am not sure how much replay value there will be
