Back 4 Blood

4-player zombie shooters may have had a time in the spotlight during the early 2010s, but in recent years triple-A publishers have opted for more fashionable and trendy game genres. Back 4 Blood is what fans of cooperative zombie games have been after for years. Combining a much-loved-but-neglected genre with leaps in gaming standards, Back 4 Blood is the perfect game to bash zombie brains with up to three of your friends.

Return 2 Form

While fans of games like Payday: The Heist and GTFO will love the crazy cooperative gameplay on offer, Back 4 Blood has the biggest likeness to Valve South’s 2008 icon, Left 4 Dead. This is seen in everything from the 4-player gameplay to the post-apocalyptic setting.

And those similarities aren’t by coincidence. After establishing the formula for one of Valve’s most popular franchises, many of the original developers from Valve South have come together to form Turtle Rock Studios. Returning to the genre that they helped to popularize, Turtle Rock Studios seem to be going all-out in their attempts to give players the much-requested sequel to Left 4 Dead 2, even if it is only spiritual.

Giving The Undead New Life

One of the ways that Back 4 Blood switches up the formula is through its deck building system. Before players dive into each of the game’s hectic levels they’ll be required to select a set of cards with different attributes. These cards affect the flow of gameplay, as well as personal character bonuses that can help change the tide of battle.

These cards fall under one of each of the following categories: reflex, discipline, brawn and fortune. Unsurprisingly, these give players things ranging from better stamina, accuracy and defense to random encounters.

Like Left 4 Dead, Turtle Rock’s Back 4 Blood has a procedural storytelling system named ‘the Director’. Like players, the game’s AI draws ‘corruption’ cards that affect what players will be up against once they head into the level. This gives each level a unique feel on every single playthrough, meaning players can’t just rely on the same old tactics and item placement to get them through the onslaught of zombie hordes.

Viral Variety

The biggest drawback in playing older cooperative shooter games is the lack of variety on offer when coming back for more. The developers have clearly had this in mind, since the game combines not only the card deck system, but also randomization between stages.

While the campaign story might not change, each playthrough has its own unique feel. Rooms that might have saved your group in a previous run thanks to a lucky cache of first aid items or ammunition could very well be completely empty on a different run. This all means that you and your teammates will have to settle for the cards you’re dealt, literally and figuratively.

Who doesn’t love to shoot up zombies with friends? Unfortunately the last decade of video games hasn’t offered players the chance to collaboratively lay waste to undead hordes, but luckily Back 4 Blood is here to change that. While there are certainly teething issues in Alpha, and there are worrying signs from the game’s publisher Warner Brothers, Back 4 Blood is looking like the spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead that we’ve all been waiting for.

  • Frantic cooperative gameplay
  • Adds much needed variety to an old formula
  • The spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead that fans have been looking for

  • Still in development
  • Publishers are pushing for very quick development that may hamper final product
  • Difficulty isn’t very well balance as of writing
