Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök had me more excited than the actual full game! I thought the original game was solid, but it just went on way, way too long. It was one of those games that I liked, but by the time I got to the end of it, I was completely done with it. There is such a thing as less is more! Well, that is the case we have here with this game as it took me around 20 hours to complete the story. I wanted to share my thoughts on this very expansive piece of DLC so you can have a better idea of if it is for you.

The Power Of The Gods!

The story of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök is pretty damn epic and something that I think this piece of DLC deserves a ton of credit for. The basics of the story are that we need to save our son Baldur from Surtur the fire demon. What really makes the story is the way the characters are written and the phenomenal voice acting. Surtur along with his brood are tremendous foils who have clear motivations and desires. The game is a delightful Norse mythology type tail and I think the fact it was not stretched out like the game was made it more compelling.

Through The Nine Realms

I played Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök on the PlayStation 5 and it looked tremendous. I already thought that the base game was very well done, actually to be fair, Ubisoft usually knocks it out of the park with their presentation when it comes to video games. With this, we have a style that feels like a real mixture of something like Lord of the Rings and the most recent God of War game. From little trolls to giants, the creatures in this land are great. Speaking of the land, it is truly amazing stuff to walk through this and just take it all in. There are some weird things here and there like floating rocks, but I think that they really nailed the presentation of this game.

Ripping Powers!

You can get access to these awesome powers in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök which you attain by using the Hugr-Rip. This is a fun mechanic and you can hold two powers at a time. You find the powers by coming across an enemy that has the power you want; you rip it from them and then you can use it. Only being able to hold two powers at a time can be a problem as I found that there were two in particular that I really liked. Due to the fear of not being able to find these again for quite some time, I was quite often reluctant to take a chance on a different ability. Still, this is a cool mechanic that I liked and would like to see expanded upon on the next Assassins Creed game.

More Of The Same

I enjoyed my time with the main game, but despite the fantasy setting of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök, I have to say that this game feels very, very similar. To be fair, it is DLC so that is to be expected, but I am not sure what I wanted, but I felt like this should have offered just something a bit more. It is hard to explain and while I enjoyed my time with the game, I have to be honest had this gone on for much longer, I may have lost interest.

I was so excited for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarök to be released and I had such high hopes and expectations. Did it live up to them? Kind of, I think that there are some great ideas at play here. I freaking loved the story, the setting, and the way you would rip abilities from enemies.

However, the core gameplay felt far too samey and after spending over 100 hours with the base game, it was starting to wear a bit thin towards the end of the game. If you liked the original game, try this out as you will probably enjoy this too. I would say it is worth playing alone if you like the kind of mythology this is about.

Pros:

  • The story that this game is telling is fantastic
  • The presentation is just 10/10 in every regard
  • Ripping powers from enemies is really cool
  • It did not overstay its welcome

Cons:

  • While cool, if the base game did nothing for you, this will not either
  • I wish I could hold more than two powers at a time
