Animal Crossing: New Leaf created by Nintendo, is one of the most addicting games that there ever was. If you are looking for an excuse to not see family members for the next 7 years, this is the perfect opportunity. This game will absolutely ruin you with its mini-games and customization options. I found my weeks absolutely consumed by the fantastic amount of gameplay offered here, so if you want a game that you can really sink some hours into, truly get invested in, this is the one for you. Let’s get into it.

Gameplay

So, the game is played from a fixed overhead 3rd person view. You take control of your own little characters and then you become mayor of a town and take care of everyone else. Your objectives are varied, you make the village look nice, talk with other residents, participate in other activities like catching bugs and fishing.

The other part of your gameplay experience will be getting into insane amounts of debt with the local tanuki, and then spending many, many hours paying it back. Interestingly, the game works through this debt system where you almost feel obligated to keep playing. Now, I’m not saying its bad, by any means, it can feel underhanded but realistically, it’s a game and you shouldn’t feel obligated.

A lot of the other characters around town have many unique and interesting personalities, which can usually be easily categorized, but there are a few things that really separate them from each other like their distinct looks and catchphrases. Its clear a lot of time and effort has been put into this game to make sure it feels nice to play, and that absolutely pays off.

This game series has a distinct style that others have tried to capture, maybe you’ve seen something similar in Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley.

Visuals

The visuals in this title are a huge leap forward from its predecessor, characters who are fluffy actually look so. Taller animals tower over smaller ones, there is a verticality that has never been quite so present before. Also, there are a few dynamic changes, like the weather and placement of houses for instance.

As the year progresses, you can see the snow start to appear, the leaves fall off the trees and the plants come bac, the following year, it’s very pleasant and really helps set the mood. The other thing I mentioned is the houses, you can choose where yours and a few other key buildings are placed in town. It’s a pretty big deal and helps engage the player, allowing you to switch things up and try something new each time you play.

The Writing

Once of Animal Crossing's best features is its adorable humor, when you speak to someone, they have such strong personalities. When you catch a fish or a bug, the game tells you a little joke. Its small stuff but it really makes the game a genuine joy to play.
