While Airborne Troops: Countdown to D-Day might be quite the mouthful. I would bet that this is one World War II shooter that most of you have never heard of. What is super strange about this game is its release history. This came out in Europe in 2003 only on the PlayStation 2, but then a few years later it made its way to the USA, but this time it got a PC port.

In A World!

The campaign is kind of a brutal slog to get through if I am being honest with you guys. I feel that they tried that they did try to give us something epic with Airborne Troops: Countdown to D-Day, but they never manage to pull it off. The main character in the game and the person we will be playing as is called, John Welsh. He is a paratrooper from the USA and he has to take on a dangerous mission that sees him land in France which is overrun by Nazis.

The presentation of the game to be fair is not that bad for an older couple of generations old game at all. The character models may have some rather “interesting “animation”, but when standing still and during cutscenes, they look pretty damn solid. The voice acting is not the greatest, but to be fair it gets the job done.

A To B

The gameplay design of Airborne Troops: Countdown to D-Day is where things kind of fall apart. Most of the levels have you getting from point A to point V and you have to complete an objective here or there along the way. Nothing wrong with that is there? Well, this game has one major flaw. You see if you get to the end of a level and you have missed out on one just one of the objectives, you have to do the whole level again!!!

Show Us Your Guns

The guns in the game are authentic to the time period so that is cool. Each weapon handles differently and I do like that there is a strange auto-aim system if you want it. The enemy AI is quite ruthless and also pretty smart.

For example, they will gang up on you whenever the opportunity arises. For the time this was pretty cool as sometimes 3rd person shooters would have the AI just stand there firing while you pick them off.

5

There are so many shooters that are offering better than what Airborne Troops: Countdown to D-Day has to offer. I kind of have a really hard time recommending this one, even back when it was released it felt like a budget game, a game that did not have much money spent on it or a game that needed more time in the testing process. If you want to play a more obscure WWII game then maybe give this one a try.

Pros:

  • The game has decent character models
  • The idea of the story is cool
  • Kind of impressive enemy AI
  • There is a nice variety to the guns
  • The sound effects are pretty booming.

Cons:

  • The whole game is designed very poorly
  • Having to redo a whole mission because missed an objective sucks
