I had a lot of fun with Armored Core Last Raven when it was released on the ps 2 back in the day. This is another entry in the long running series and what was neat about this one was that it is a direct sequel to the previous game and served as a continuation of the story.

This is typical Armored Core action at its best and of course, that means if you like the series, you will like this. However, for those new to the franchise, I do have to say this would not be a good jumping in point if I am being honest.

Tipping The Scales Of War

One of the reasons that I was excited to play Armored Core Last Raven when it was first released in 2004 was the story as it continued what was set in Armored Core Nexus. The world is still in tatters after what went down in the last game and the rivaling nations of that story have joined forces to become the Alliance. There is a rival group called Vortex that is made up of various merceries and they are fighting against them. We get to decide which side of the war we want to be on and there are multiple endings as a result of this.

Becoming A War Machine

I can see why some people may say that Armored Core Last Raven is far too similar to the last game. It starts the same way, you have your mech and you have a set amount of credits to gear it out the way you want. For me, the fun of this series has always been customizing the mech and that rings true here. You earn more credits with each mission you do so you are always looking to improve your mech which is a progression system that I like.

Front Mission

There are tons of missions in the game and the structure of Armored Core Last Raven is quite easy to figure out. You complete a mission and then this opens up new ones, new missions can also be opened depending on how you are upgrading your mech too. Most of the missions are basically you destroying other mechs, but the game is rather interesting with its difficulty. I found there to be no middle ground here. Missions are either a walk in the park or brutally difficult. Some of the harder missions have a real trial and error thing going with you have to tinker with your mech to get through them. I liked this, but I can also see why some would say it is frustrating.

Coming From All Sides

The presentation of Armored Core Last Raven is typical of that of a 2004 PlayStation 2 game. It has a rather dark and grimy look about it which does fit the setting very well. I like the level of destruction that is here and it has that signature Armored Core look which fans will love. At the time though what blew me away here was the sound, I had a pretty high tech (well for 2004) 5.1 surround sound system and this game took full advantage of that and well and truly rocked the room with its badass techno electronic soundtrack and mayhem of battle!

If you like this series and especially if you liked Armored Core Nexus, you are going to like Armored Core Last Raven. This is a game that was made for the already established fan base and I am cool with that. I do feel you simply must play Nexus before jumping in here though or the game will not have much appeal for you. I do also want to mention that the VS mode here is so much fun if you have a buddy that is also into this.

Pros:

  • I thought it was a good continuation of the AC story
  • As always playing around and customizing your mech is fun
  • It has a badass surround sound soundtrack
  • The VS mode is very addictive if you have a friend who is into this game too

Cons:

  • Some of the missions are really harsh in their difficulty
  • This game is not new player friendly at all
