If I had to pick a genre of game that I’d designate as a guilty pleasure of mine, I would say that particular genre would be Match-3’s. I’m not sure if it has to do with the veiled complexity of them, their accessibility and ‘pick up and play’ potential, or even the relaxing aspects of matching games, but they are incredibly addicting to me. In fact, once I had downloaded Bejeweled 3, I played it for nearly 4 hours straight when I first opened it. I don’t know where the time went and I don’t know if I really care; it was a great time. Today, however, the focus falls on a bit of a lesser known literal match-3 gem: 7 Wonders of the Ancient World. I would rank this as a title that inspires more nostalgia than constant desire to play, but there’s a certain charm to it that could keep anyone coming back daily.

Match 3 in Historic Locations

There’s really no story to this game, which is to be expected from a match-3 title. It operates in exactly the same way as other games of the genre. Match 3 or more of the same colored tile in a row, destroy those tiles.

Any matches over just three will net you a bonus – in this game, 4 in a row gifts you with a lightning ball, 5 in a row nets you a fire ball. If you’ve ever played Bejeweled or Candy Crush, this is already common knowledge. 7 Wonders of the Ancient World offers a bit of a twist, as the base game mode is time attack, where you try to score enough points to finish the level before time runs out. The main premise is also based on matching/scoring in order to get more workers to complete the wonder you’re on. I have to say, I don’t care for playing against the clock in match-3’s, especially this one.

Not only does that make gameplay stressful, but this game is already difficult as it is. Most of the puzzles you encounter at first will become a ‘no more moves’ situation. In theory, this title should be relaxing to play and satisfying to complete, but instead it is the opposite of both. If you’re looking for a challenging match-3 to get into, this may just be for you. Be warned that although it plays exactly like other match-3’s, it quickly becomes tedious/near impossible by the last few Wonders.

Travel the World

Unsurprisingly, the graphics and sound design for this game are underwhelming. I don’t think I can properly knock 7 Wonders of the Ancient World for this because no match-3 in history is made with the express purpose of aesthetics/story in mind, but it was still disappointing. The rerelease in 2014 on Steam was updated a bit and looks much better, but the original DS title was rough around the edges.

Finally, 7 Wonders fails most at being a title that stands out. There are essentially no mechanics or features that set it apart from predecessors/other giants of the genre, which makes it hard to fully recommend in comparison.

7 Wonders of the Ancient World is not necessarily a bad game, but it lacks the attention and care that other titles of the genre have gotten. Subpar design, uninteresting gameplay, and crazy difficulty spikes all lead me to say that you might be better off playing Bejeweled unless you’re truly into hard games.

  • Addicting
  • Some cool power ups
  • Casual, accessible gameplay

  • Incredibly difficult (last level essential impossible)
  • Overall design is bland
  • Little innovation in execution, just an average match-3
