Witch and Council

If roguelite deckbuilders are your jam, Witch and Council is a game that you need to check out. As I write this, we are a few weeks away from a full release, but I had to just talk about this right now as it is one of the most fun and exciting games of this genre to be released in 2024! While the deckbuilding and roguelite mechanics on offer in this game are awesome, tying this all together is a fun story about a land of magic, a naughty witch, and a whimsical art style that is impossible not to fall in love with!

A Little More Mana

The world that Witch and Council is set in is a world that in many ways could have been very similar to the Earth that we know. However, in this world, there are tons of mana particles in the air and this means that all of the beings that call this world home can use magic, granted some better than others and some will use magic for good and others for more selfish reasons. Thankfully there are places like the Magic Academy where young magic users can hone their skills. One such magic user is our main character, Lulu!

It's A Kind Of Magic

Lulu wants more and more power and she is the nucleus that ties the story of Witch and Council together. She ends up going into a part of the academy she should not and as a result, she comes face to face with a bunch of powerful magic users! However, Lulu can learn new powers and become super strong if she forges ahead, but there are those who wish to put a stop to her. This is a lot of fun and as I said in the intro, whimsical is probably the best way to describe the whole vibe of the story that the game is telling.

Keeping Your Cards Close To Your Chest

At its core, Witch and Council is a standard roguelite deckbuilding game. You start off with a simple assortment of cards that gives you various attacks, abilities, defense, and so on and it is up to you to make the best of these cards during the turn based battles. What is neat about this game is that when you fight and beat a boss, you get to add them and more cards to your ranks. However, each character that you add has a special card of their own that offers some kind of unique ability that can add a great deal of strategy and fun to the battles. I know that it may sound kind of simple and run of the mill, but there is honestly something fun and addictive here that you have to play to appreciate.

A Magical World Of Whimsy

I just fell in love with the world that Witch and Council is set in right away. The game has this lovely hand drawn art style that makes it seem like you are playing through some kind of Saturday morning cartoon. It is charming, it is whimsical and there is always some kind of vibrant magical effect going on! There is a wonderful and imaginative cast of characters here and it was always exciting to see what the next boss I would face would look like. The game just oozes charm and it is so easy to get sucked into this vibrant and colorful world that they have created here.

If you love this genre of game, I have no doubt in my mind that Witch and Council is going to be a game that takes up a great deal of your time! This is the kind of game I would play on my Steam Deck just before I go to sleep, only for me to look at the clock and see my intended 10 minute session has turned into 90 minutes and now I am wide awake! As I write this, the game is just around the corner from being released and already it is one of the best and most fun games of this genre I have had the chance to check out this year!

Pros:

  • I love the magical and whimsical world that they have created here
  • The game is gorgeous to look at
  • It is a ton of fun the way you can add bosses to your ranks
  • While it is fun and charming, it is also a challenging deckbuilding roguelite experience

Cons:

  • Some may argue it could do with a few more unique features
  • The English translation can be a tad hard to make sense of in some places
