AIKMAN'S OWN

Troy Aikman has won two consecutive football championships, and now he has his own game that will be a winner among sports gamers.

Together, Troy and Williams Entertainment have compiled a playbook consisting of the very best plays to bring you this totally awesome hard-hitting football game. Other features have been added, like weather conditions, field type, and real team logos and colors all of which add realism to the game and the mechanics of the game play. You can even play the entire season, keeping up with your standings in your conference.

As you play the game, offense and defense may take time to get used to, and the playbook consists of many plays that you will have to learn to master both the defensive and offensive aspects. You will also have to learn the audible plays in order to fool your opponents during crunch time. You can even increase the plays in the playbook by flipping the plays--meaning the positions of the players is reversed. Troy Aikman Football puts many options and features at your disposal. The reviews below have the final say on what I think about this game. I have a feeling Rookie will have something to say as well.

TROY WILL CARRY YOU TO ANOTHER CHAMPIONSHIP

This football game features an overhead view of the playing field and offers a Full Season as well as an Exhibition Gaming Mode. Passing in this game is easy and gamers entering into the football gaming genre will find passing a snap. Running the ball isn't that easy, but it can be mastered in one sitting. The digitized speech segments, including the grunts and groans of the players are very well done. You can almost feel the impact as they make contact and crash into each other on the field. The team on offense even yells, "Break!" when they come out of the huddle. It gives you the feeling that you're the one stepping up to the line of scrimmage. All of the NFL teams make an appearance here, and there are plenty of plays to choose from.

The real football game for the Jaguar is here! Now armchair athletes have a reason to celebrate. Troy Aikman NFL Football for the Jaguar gives players a realistic game of football that's loaded with lots of moves and large characters.

The graphics in Troy Aikman look very good. One look at the pictures below and it's easy to see that this one's going to be a game that's hard to beat. If you want lots of plays, this one's got them all. For a first football game, it's really impressive.

  • Machine: SNES, Genesis
  • Manufacturer: Williams Enterprises.

If the Dallas Cowboys played like this game does, they wouldn't have two Super Bowl rings. Poor graphics and choppy animation guarantee this entry a place in the basement of any league.

  • Machine: Genesis, SNES;
  • Manufacturer: Williams Ent.;

Many of you may remember that last month we gave you the lowdown on the SNES version of Troy Aikman NFL Football. Now Troy is stepping onto the Genesis playing field with an almost exact transfer of his SNES title.

For those of you who were absent last month, let's briefly review a few of the game's highlights. You can lead any of the NFL's 28 teams through the '93 - '94 or '94 - '95 seasons, or customize your own. An extensive playbook features three plays that Troy personally designed for the game and allows you to create three of your own. Troy also analyzes the match-ups before each game, at which time you can manipulate salaries per position or use bonus money gained through wins to improve your team.

The Genesis Aikman offers crisper graphics than the SNES version, but player movement is still a bit on the choppy side and leaves something to be desired. The sound effects and music don't have the same pizzazz as on SNES and if you don't have a six-button controller you may experience difficulty trying to pull off certain moves such as stiff arms and hurdling jumps.

As is the trend in sports video games, the Genesis version outperforms its SNES counterpart, but only by the absolute slimmest of margins.

An option-filled, pass-happy football game, Troy Aikman NFL Football still falls short in some categories. Although the SNES version is better, this Aikman is a decent competitor.

Troy Knows Football

Much like the SNES version, the game-play options keep this game on the field. You choose from all 28 NFL clubs, each scouted by Troy himself. Once you've picked your favorite team, you can alter players' salaries, and the more you pay, the better they play. Troy's created 81 exciting plays to work with, or you can invent your own offensive masterpieces.

ProTips:

  • When on defense, press Button A to jump when a pass is near you to increase the chance for an interception.
  • If you're going to get hit hard, dive forward to pick up five or ten extra yards.

The extensive options continue. Choose from five game- play modes, three difficulty levels, and six realistic field conditions. Play a Preseason exhibition, a full season with the actual '93—'94 schedule, or create a dream season with the Custom Mode.

The Fall of Troy

Plays that run the way they're diagrammed are rare in football games, but not in Aikman. Troy's hand-tailored designs won't leave you dazed and confused. Smooth, easy-to-operate controls help with every offensive and defensive maneuver. Moves like Spins, Hurdles, Comer Presses, and Diving Tackles add a touch of realism as you go for six.

The main concern with this game is the graphics. The sprites are a blurry, jumbled mess, and they'll cause confusion for beginners (patience is required). The sound won't win any Super Bowl trophies, either. A shortage of sound effects and muffled voice-overs make this game sound like a cheap imitation ofTecmo Super Bowl.

  • Aikman uses the NFL's newest rule change, the Two-Point Conversion. Be creative and learn which plays work best.
  • This game is passing oriented, so concentrate most of your money on your QBs and Receivers.
  • Mess around with the Play Design Mode -- you just might create the ultimate offensive weapon.

Not Quite As Good the Second Time Around

Troy Aikman NFL Football is loaded with superb options, special features, and excellent control, but all that doesn't add up to an excellent game. Poor sound and graphics turn an exciting SNES experience into an average Genesis game.

What the Genesis did for Joe Montana, the SNES does for Troy Aikman. The All-Pro Super Bowl champ gets his shot at the video game market with Troy Aikman NFL Football, and he comes up a high-scoring winner.

So Many Options, So Little Time

Troy Aikman NFL Football is loaded with options and special features, such as five game-play modes (including one-player and two-player coach options), three difficulty levels, and six different field conditions (like mud. turf, and snow). Although you don't have actual NFL players, you do get all 28 NFL teams and their official logos, along with analyses based on the real-life performance of the teams. One '90s feature is the ability to buy a winning team: You can adjust your players' salaries, and the more you pay, the better they play.

ProTips:

  • Aikman Football has the NFL's newest rule change: the two- point conversion. Use it before they change their minds!
  • If you know that you're going to be hit hard, dive forward so you can pick up an extra five or ten yards.
  • On defense, hit Button A to jump w hen a pass is near your defensive back. It's your best chance to make an interception.

Another great option is the ability to create your own offensive and defensive plays, a feature unique to this game. You can also choose from 81 of Aikman's favorites. Play your best offense during a preseason game, a full season with the actual '93-'94 schedule, or customize your own 16-game season and play all of your favorite teams!

Before starting your game, create a few special passing plays that will bury your opponent.

Aikman-Style Football

Excellent controls intensify the smoothly paced, high-scoring, pass-oriented action. Unlike many other football games, the play you choose will run the way it was diagrammed. Your ball carriers can effortlessly juke defenders with dives, spins, and other offensive maneuvers. Defensively, you can time your moves and leaps perfectly to make interceptions.

The game provides the traditional behind-the-QB view of the field, but the graphics are clustered and seem a bit out of focus, relying on boring colors.

  • Use the option play often. If you get in some trouble in the pocket, you can easily roll out and dish the ball to your halfback.
  • Considering the passing- oriented offense of this game, it's a good idea to increase the salaries of your QBs and wide receivers.

Poor voice-overs and sound effects diminish the overall feel of the game. Your best bet is to turn off the sound and listen to something else -- there are no Super Bowl sounds here.

Good but Could Be Better

Although it lacks great graphics and noteworthy sound, Troy Aikman NFL Football does contain outstanding options and superb game play. It's just about everything you'd expect from one of the NFL's biggest superstars.
