Man do I freaking love what Tinkerlands is offering. As I write this, the game is in early access, but they have a pretty detailed roadmap of what they have planned over the next several months. I have had an absolute blast playing this, and while not all of the features are not yet implemented into the game as I am talking about it, there is still more than enough here for you to sink your teeth into. This is the kind of game where you can lose a whole evening even though you meant to play just for 30 to 60 minutes.
I See What You Did There
When I first started playing the game, I was actually getting the vibes that Tinkerlands is what a survival Legend of Zelda game would be like. However, it was when I was playing with a friend online, and they said that they felt this was something people who loved Terraria would gravitate towards. I thought that was a much better comparison, although this is top down and not 2D. If you love survival games that have a charming style to them, you are exactly the kind of person for whom this game is aimed at.
An Island Life For Me
There is not a ton of story in Tinkerlands, but the game does have a great deal of whimsy and charm to it. The idea is that we are washed up on a weird series of islands, and we need to hop between the islands so that we can find the resources we need to survive. The game has some great NPCs who you can meet on the different islands, as well as get them to come to yours, and these guys have great personalities and will do stuff like give you new quests that come with some quirky story bits. I would say that while there is a story and personality here, you do end up making up your own adventure as you progress.
Keeping You Busy
This is the kind of game that always has you on your way to do something, and then you get distracted and end up on a different adventure. In Tinkerlands, you need to explore to find items so that you can eat and, of course, grow your own food, items, and even build your own home. The game opens up by letting you jump on your little boat and hop to other islands that have different things, enemies, people, and so on for you to experience. There is already a solid amount of content here in the game, but I am really excited to see what other stuff they have planned. There is a fun fishing mini-game, enemies to face, and a whole host of secrets to discover. I have been playing on my own, but I have had a blast playing with a friend, too, and I think that is where the real longevity of the game is going to be.
To The Islands!
I fell in love with Tinkerlands right from the start as I love the pixel art that they have used to bring this wacky survival adventure to life. Sure, some may say that there are many other games that have a similar style. However, there is just something fun and quirky about this. For pixel art, the characters show a ton of personality, especially the larger characters and enemies that you will meet as you embark on your travels. Speaking of travels, the islands have different areas for you to explore and I found it to be pretty exciting, never knowing what the next island would have in store for me.
Even though according to the roadmap of Tinkerlands, they have a few substantial updates to make to the game (the town building one is the one I am most looking forward to) there is more than enough here in this relatively early build that I have played to make this a very easy recommendation. Survival games are a bit of a hit and miss for me, but this one here is most certainly a massive hit as it is so well done. Plus, you can team up with some friends and make your own little island community. Me and my friend are trying to bully a couple of other friends into getting this so we can all play together.
Pros:
- This game has very charming pixel art
- There are many aspects to the survival gameplay
- I liked exploring the different islands as they felt unique
- You can make your own little community with your friends
Cons:
- There is a lot of content here, but the game is still being worked on
- We have not managed to talk our other two friends into getting the game!
