The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution

The first game was amazing so I came into The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution expecting great things. I have to say that the original game is one of my all time favorite VR experiences that I have ever had so right off the bat (or should I say Lucile?) this game had some very big shoes to fill. At the end of the day, all I wanted was more of the same, but with a new story and while I got that, I also got some other stuff I did not care for.

Mama, I Do Not Love You

To be fair, I think that the story The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution is telling is great. Once again we play as “The Tourist” and while we are trying to help people survive in this dead version of New Orleans. We end up thrust into a major conflict with Mana and her tower and we agree to try and stop her and destroy this tower. It is fun stuff and a great continuation of the world that they built in the first game.

Making The Right Moves

This is a very challenging game, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution like the first game only gives you so many hours each day to do what you need to do. This ranges from doing the main story missions, taking on side quests, and gathering important resources. As each day passes, things get tougher and items get scarcer. It does a fantastic job of making you feel like you are in a zombie apocalypse. You get to make various decisions along the way and this was also in the first game, but here just like then, they do not feel as massive as I think they should.

More Of The Same…. Kind Of

If you played the first game and if you did not, I have no idea why you would play The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution first! Things are going to feel very familiar here, it feels more like an expansion than a full game if I am being honest. It controls well for the most part, but I feel that it is much more challenging than the first game. It feels like there are way more dead and bad guys to deal with here. While the controls are responsive enough, I did encounter a few gameplay bugs from slowing down to my controls crapping out on me. To be fair, I am sure that stuff like this will be fixed in the coming weeks with updates, but it was immersion breaking and it was not an issue the first game had.

Like You Are In The Thick Of It!

I played The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution on the Meta Quest which is a modest VR set, but it still looked great. However, it is on the PlayStation VR 2 I am really excited to play this. You see, this like the first is a very atmospheric game and this version of New Orleans is just awesome to explore and try to survive in. It is legit scary when you have a bunch of walkers chasing you down and you do feel like you are in this world. There were a couple of graphical glitches here and there, but to be fair, I do wonder if this is to do with the limitations of the hardware.

7.5

Is The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners - Chapter 2: Retribution a good game? I would say that it is and if you liked the first game, you will like this. I enjoyed how it built upon the world created in that first game and think that it is a solid continuation. However, the few gameplay and graphical bugs along with the pretty much exact same gameplay, lessened the wow factor here over what I got with that first game.

Pros:

  • The story was great
  • I liked how many interesting characters there were
  • Once again, New Orleans is the star of the show here
  • The game can be legit terrifying in places

Cons:

  • The game is very similar to the first, but somehow more glitchy
  • I am interested to see if they improve the visuals for the PSVR2 version of the game
