The Plague Doctor of Wippra

Welcome to the Plague Doctor of Wippra, a short point-and-click adventure that has you play as Doctor Oswald Keller, a plague doctor trying to save his small village of Wippra. This medieval fantasy game will have you banging your head against a wall due to how realistically annoying and dismissive the general populace was about medicine and preventative measures in those times.

Gameplay

If travelling around a medieval world and trying to find the cause of the Black Death sounds like a grand old time to you, then you have come to the right place. This is very much a classic point-and-click adventure like the ones you knew when you were young. They have returned with a vengeance and produced The Plague Doctor of Wippra, an adventure game where you play a plague doctor looking to find the cause of the Black Plague.

You will spend a significant amount of time walking around and interacting with people and the environment. There is a lot to see here and it is up to you to make sense of this outbreak so you can better defend against it. Like The Curse of Monkey Island or Sam & Max: Hit the Road.

You will find a lot of items scattered around which you will hold onto. In time, you will find ways to use those items to solve interesting puzzles or assist the people. I found this game to be very intuitive and much less jokey than many of the games within this genre. It’s a title that takes itself seriously, and the writing and gameplay really shows that.

Story and World

So, you play a doctor who is looking to find out why the Black Plague is happening. That’s a hefty order, but you’ve got the wherewithal to get it done. A considerable amount of this game is having conversations and finding stuff, but the world itself is absolutely stunning. The people are responsive with realistic dialogue. At no point did I feel like a conversation was wasting my time. I felt like people were wasting my time, but in a way that made sense in the narrative. It was a result of incredible characterization, not of poor game design. That is something that is hard to replicate in even the highest budget games.

My only gripe is that the game is too short. The thick atmosphere and excellent storytelling are something special to behold, but its all over too soon.

Visuals

The next thing to discuss is the visuals. I was blown away from start to finish with how impressive this game looks. Everything, from the fantastic wide shots of the landscapes, to the more intimate scenes around the village, looked stunning. Everything was meticulously crafted and looked like a pixel painting of an actual scene of the medieval times. If you are looking for a stunning pixel art game that really tries to stand out, you will be very pleased with this.
